The symbol for Pisces is two fish, swimming in opposite directions, an apt metaphor for the ambivalence that characterizes those born under this sign (between February 21 and March 22). Pisceans are the most ethereal and otherworldly people in the Zodiac, dreaming more about what could be than living in what actually is. Visionary and prone to flights of fancy, Pisces folks add a compassionate and artistic dimension to our world. But when are you, Pisces, being an inspired dreamer, or just a cosmic escape artist?

Pisces, at your best. . .
. . . you are endlessly compassionate to every living being in the world. You are capable of a deep, egoless transcendence and tend to look for and value a spiritual connection with other people instead of a solely materialistic one. You don’t get caught up in all of the earth-bound issues that ensnare most people’s focus: money, status, looking cool, etc. Your values are more transcendental than material. This is because you can easily become anyone, and you can fit with any type of partner or become anyone’s friend. It is because of this chameleon nature that you feel so connected to everyone in the universe, because you can see a part of yourself in everyone you meet.

…and at you’re worst…
Feeling like you’re the next Mother Teresa? Well, a transcendental nature can run both ways. In fact, it can backfire into sheer escapism–yup, that vibrant inner fantasy life of yours can manifest into less desirable behaviors such as binge-watching Netflix and finishing another bottle of wine. You can wrap yourself up in a really cushy comfort zone, but it often results in you being unfocused, wishy-washy, and go-with-the-flow even when the flow ain’t going anywhere! Sometimes, it’s hard for you to be the driver in your own life, and you view everything fatalistically and superstitiously. You can be melodramatic and self-sacrificing to a fault, playing the martyr instead of accepting the consequences of your actions and taking initiative. Because you morph so easily, you sometimes forget to ask for what YOU want, leading to unsustainable relationships loaded with drama.

Handling your Pisces nature
Take measures to fully occupy your life by taking it in YOUR own hands. Don’t play the victim by lamenting about how everything bad magically happens to you. Don’t just stagnate in the cushy comfort zone you can conjure for yourself—actively harness your imaginative powers, shaping your visions into realities you can live, instead of just dream about. Get lots of REM sleep, solitude away from others’ demands, and unstructured time where you don’t need to accomplish anything in particular—or watch your escapist tendencies permeate into more serious parts of your life, causing things to fall apart. Use your feeling of connectedness to all living beings to do volunteer or charity work. This will make it possible for you to devote your spiritual nature to giving to those who can give back, instead of sinking it into family and friends who are losers and who just drain you.

Clueing others in about you….
…by telling them that you need solitude—a quiet, peaceful place where you can escape from life’s demands. Insist on taking time for yourself, because your kindness is a valuable resource that should not be depleted. Learn from every experience where your boundaries have been crossed or you’ve been taken advantage of. Set healthy boundaries and let other know what they are. Hold to them in a loving way. Build a spiritual practice into your life—you’ll be amazed by how it sustains you. And let all your friends know that, while you may seem like a follower, a shapeshifter, a morpher, that you do infact lead—but not in material ways. Your leadership is in the spiritual, the eternal realms, which is where you really live. When plugged into the divine and into a moral sense that sustains you, you are a guiding light for everyone around you.

Those born under the sign of the Centaur (born between November 22 and December 20) are well known for being the fun-loving, merrymakers of the Zodiac. After all, they are ruled by Jupiter, the planet of Benevolence. But when are you the life of the party, or just being the class clown? Everyone appreciates some joie de vivre, but there’s a time and a place for humor.

Sagittarius, when you’re at your best. . .
. . . you’re uplifting to those in life who are downtrodden. Your optimism can be infectious, and people may turn to you to brighten their day. You know the expression “Every cloud has a silver lining?” I’ll bet that was penned by a Sagittarian. You exude confidence, and people invite you over because you are gregarious and vivacious. You’re also resilient, if not a little bit lucky, so you can always rebound—like those Weeble toys with the weighted bottoms that pop up every time they get toppled over. Use this magnificent gift of yours to help others when they’re facing challenging times. “It’s always darkest before dawn” was probably said by another Sagittarian!

…and at you’re worst…
Now here’s the rub: there is such a thing as being TOO optimistic. At some point in your life, you have probably made a Capricorn’s eyes roll. You have the tendency to offer more than you can deliver. And there’s also having TOO much fun; you don’t want to always be the guy that the bartender has to kick out after last call. Do you know the expression “To assume is to make an ASS out of U and ME?” That was probably told to a Sagittarian. Being opinionated is fine, but sometimes you mistake your opinions for the gospel truth—so chuck the soapbox. You may have a tendency to tell tall tales by mistaking stylistic embellishments for actual facts. And at other times, you can be a little uncouth and overly blunt with the truth.

Handling your Sagittarian nature
Practice adding the phrase “Well, it is my belief that…” as a qualifier before spouting any opinions that might come off as sweeping generalizations. Demonstrate that you are capable of listening to reason, so that you develop some cred for times when you don’t feel like being sensible. Be aware of your social footprint—you tend to be bigger and louder than others so just be conscious of your presence to make room for the mousier, shyer people out there. Overall, just tone it down a bit.

Clueing others in about you….
Let people know that you are always well-intentioned (because, quite frankly, you actually are). What you have to understand is that despite the positive vibes you put out there, not everyone will respond well to them. For some people, the results of what you do are more important than your intentions. Let others know not to take you too seriously—that you, in fact, don’t even take yourself too seriously. Also realize that when you are fired up about something, you have a way of talking about it as if it’s real and present. Others may end up believing that you are promising something that you actually have not thought through well enough. This can lead to others feeling betrayed, so make sure you are expressing that “I’m not promising anything yet” or “I’m not fully committed to this, but…” For a Sagittarius, it’s good to have a few qualifying statements on hand!

If you don’t have Saturn in Cancer, you can find out where YOU have Saturn here.

If you want to really understand people, you have to understand temperament.  Understanding temperament means understanding the building blocks of personality we are all made up of.  And that would be the four elements and the three qualities.

Knowing a person’s strongest element (Fire, Earth, Air or Water) can have you really “get” them and once you know how the people in your life work, you can predict how they’ll respond to things around them and what they’ll prioritize according to their values.  Then you can trust them to be who they are and you can relax in your relationships.  Knowing a person’s strongest quality (Cardinal, Fixed or Mutable) can make it easy to synergize with them in a team effort.  Their quality tells you their style of action and how they can be more effective in projects whether at work or at home.

A person’s signature sign is the combination of their strengths—their strongest quality and strongest element—and it’s just as important and significant a part of who they are as their Sun, Moon and Rising signs are.  Sometimes more significant.  The only reason most people know their Sun sign is that it’s easy to figure out.  The only reason most people don’t know their signature sign is that it needs to be figured out by an astrologer.  But this is not really hard to learn how to do and it can improve your relationships with everyone in your life.  And this is something I teach in the first session of my Chart Analysis Techniques class coming up in February.

People come to me asking about their relationships a lot and in my 20+ years of practice as an astrologer, I’ve learned that these questions aren’t always about romance or marriage.  People care about how they relate with everybody in their life—spouse, parents, children, co-workers and friends.  And the elements and qualities have a lot of answers, including:
•    what kinds of people are easiest for you to get along with
•    how do you spot those people? how does it feel to be around them?
•    what kinds of people are you drawn to and why?
•    how do you, by “filling in your missing place,” unintentionally end up drawing the very people it’s hardest for you to get along with?
•    how can you (with a little positive attention) figure out how to get along with them anyway?
•    what’s your operational style and how can you use it to be more effective in all your projects (both at work and at home)?
•    how does your operational style impact your co-workers?
•    how can you work with people who are different from you—with a sense of respect for their styles?
•    how can you get the best work out of people you manage (by knowing their styles) and feel most appreciated by those who manage you?
•    and how can you, by living in the way that’s best for your signature sign, access a deep sense of purpose and meaning in your life?

All this is incredibly useful stuff that a client can recognize in themselves and put to use right away.  I consider the signature important enough to include it in almost every reading I do and it’s usually the first thing I interpret.

Describing the elements and qualities first thing in a client’s first session serves several purposes at once.  First, it gives them golden information and insights about how to optimize their personality traits for both effectiveness and happiness. Secondly, it gives the client ways to organize things they already know about human nature into comprehensible personality traits they recognize in the people around them—and thus affects all those relationships in a good way.  So it gives them a modular personality-type system they can see at work in their life—without ever having to consult an astrologer again if they don’t want to (because I believe in teaching the client to fish, rather than spoon-feeding them fish).

Thirdly, it establishes rapport between me and the client, as the client begins to feel “gotten” and “seen” and even validated in ways that really matter.  Fourthly, it lays the foundation for our continued conversation about the client’s chart as we venture forward into further details of their personality.  Having our shared understanding of the elements and qualities to refer back to allows us to have useful conversations about anything in the chart in a short amount of time, so we can cover more ground faster.

If you liked this teaching tidbit, you would enjoy the class it came from:
Chart Analysis Techniques, beginning Feb 11, 2014.
It makes human personality comprehensible and predictable.
Look here for more information and to sign up.

To all the Virgo sign types (born between August 23 and September 22) of the world:  if you’re ambivalent about your perfectionistic ways, it’s no wonder.  On the one hand, your attention to detail means that your work life tends to run in a very efficient way.  But on the other hand, your personal life sometimes suffers from your tendency to ignore the forest while hyper-focusing on the trees.

Virgo, when you’re at your best. . .
. . . your fine traits make you a desirable addition to any workplace—you’re hard-working, dedicated, detail-oriented and have a profound service ethic no other sign can touch.  Your awareness of what is wrong leads to a very natural ability to put things right.  You are motivated to establish good routines and healthy habits—you excel at putting systems into place that run smoothly on their own.  And your service-oriented attitude puts the attention squarely where it needs to be—on the customer.

. . . and at your worst. . .
It’s not news that those same traits that you express so well at work can become problematic in your private life.  But at what point does meticulousness turn into perfectionism, criticism and maybe even nagging?  It may be hard for you to tell because you’re accustomed to the voice of the critic inside your own head, constantly driving you.  And your tendency to be in service can lead to self-abnegation and invisibility, leaving you feeling that all your good efforts go unnoticed.  When the desire for perfection exceeds the desire to give, Virgo goes off the rails.

Handling Your Virgo Nature
Like Boxer, the horse in George Orwell’s Animal Farm, your credo might well be, “I will work harder!”  But that won’t solve every problem.  Sometimes what’s called for is to soften and allow others to serve you for a change.  This is what you secretly long for, but it’s hard to find competent help, as you well know.  Delegation is a skill you absolutely must develop, and that involves finding competent-enough people and patiently training them in the things you do so well—then allowing them to do those things, even if imperfectly, without criticism from you.

Clueing Others In About You
As a Virgo, your tendency is to see what needs fixing, then to take responsibility for it and forget to ask for help.  Believe it or not, the people around you have no idea how hard this is on you.  Practice being vulnerable by asking for what you need and then letting others give it to you.  They would actually be happy to tell you all about the things you do right and how deserving you are.  They’d be happy to remind you that everything is not your job, so Virgo:  take a break, take some credit, take a vacation.  Come back refreshed and renewed, ready to enjoy the supreme satisfaction of the pursuit of excellence.

Of the 3 water signs, one is Cardinal, one is Fixed and one is Mutable.  When a zodiac sign is Cardinal, that means it sends its elemental energy in a directed way.  If it’s Fixed, then it consolidates and contains its elemental energy while the Mutable signs disperse and diffuse their elemental energy.  What does this mean for the 3 water signs, Cancer (Cardinal), Scorpio (Fixed) and Pisces (Mutable)?  Looking at physical symbols for the water signs is an excellent way to understand them and their relationship to each other.

Cancer, The Mountain Spring
Cancer, the Cardinal Water sign is the first to appear in the zodiacal order.  It represents directed water.  This means moving water, symbolized by a mountain spring, born out of the earth, the freshest of waters and the Water sign with the most drive.  Cancer’s Cardinality carries fresh water to ecosystems that need it, nurturing and growing life.

Cancer combines Water’s fluidity with Cardinal motivation, drive and leadership.  Cancer is the water sign with energy and direction.  Cancer has focus in a way the other two do not.  Think of a busy mother (this is, after all, the mother archetype) involved in her energetic nesting activity or think of a fierce mama bear, defending her cubs.  Think of a mother duck, lining up her chicks and leading them to water for the first time.  This sign has force, motivation and purpose to it.

Scorpio, The Lake
Scorpio is the second Water sign and it’s Fixed.  Imagine that Cancer’s mountain spring has flowed downhill and gathered momentum until it’s become a rushing river.  Now imagine all the force of that river dammed into a lake and you have Scorpio.  Another way to think of Scorpio is to look at a glass of water.  It looks placid and still but actually, the contained liquid is exerting a tremendous amount of force on all sides of the glass.  If there’s a crack in the glass anywhere, the water will find it and press through.  That’s Scorpio.

Scorpio combines the fluidity of Water with Fixed strength, solidity and continuity.  Scorpio has amazing staying power, sometimes obsessively so—in fact, Scorpio has the capacity to use obsession and compulsion to its own advantage.  And Scorpio’s tremendous sensitivity, though often experienced as a problem, is actually an advantage because it is the root of Scorpio’s ability to find weaknesses in the enemy or in the problem that can be used to overcome it.

Pisces, The Vast Ocean
All waters eventually lead to the sea. Pisces, the Mutable Water sign, combines fluid Water with flexible, ever-changing Mutability.  Mutable Water is best symbolized by the vast oceans, filled with eddies, currents and tides.  The ocean is ever-changing and always moving, but never moving in a given direction.  In the ocean, change is the constant.  And so it is with Pisces.

Pisces is the only water sign that doesn’t need a shell to protect itself.  Cancer hides in its Crab shell while Scorpio hides behind a cool exterior (occasionally coming out to sting with its Scorpion tail), but Pisces can defend itself while remaining soft.  This is because Pisces is adept at shapeshifting and mimicry.  How can you attack something when you don’t know what it is?  Pisces meets confrontation indirectly (as do all the water signs) and preserves itself by slipperiness and evasion.  Pisces is the ultimate moving target.

Which of these do you resonate with most?  Are you an energetic, bubbling spring, flowing downhill, gathering force as you go?  Or are you a still-waters-run-deep lake, sensitive to all that touches your surface?  Or are you the huge, ever-shifting ocean—permeable and connected to everything, remaining soft and open to experience?

GeminiThe Messenger God
The Mutable Air sign Gemini is ruled by Mercury, messenger of the gods.  Mercury’s nickname was Quicksilver, which is what we sometimes call the metal mercury.  If you’ve ever broken a thermometer and held a ball of mercury in your palm, you have experienced the mutability of Gemini—mercury is the only metal that is liquid at room temperature.  It is as impossible to grasp, hold and contain as Geminis themselves.  If you’ve ever dated a Gemini and become frustrated at their sheer evasiveness, believe me, it’s nothing to the frustration Geminis experience at their own selves.

The mythological Mercury had wings on his shoes and his hat, and carried a winged staff called a caduceus, which was wrapped with two serpents.  The caduceus has been adopted by the medical profession as a symbol (Mercury has historically been associated with medicine), and you can see a stylized version of it in the logo of the American Medical Association.

Mercury needed all the wings he could get because, as Olympian messenger, he was able to go to all 3 realms: heaven, earth and the underworld.  He could hang out on Olympus with the other gods, roam the earth disguised as a mortal, and he was the only being (besides Pluto himself) who could travel freely to and from the underworld.

Mercury As Psychopompos Or Guide To The Underworld
The underworld was the domain belonging to Pluto (Hades to the Greeks) and was a realm forbidden to all other beings, both earthly and divine.  To go there, you had to die, but not so for Mercury.  He often served as an official escort, assisting mortals and gods to return from the underworld once they had entered the land of the dead.  Examples of this include Orpheus’ attempted rescue of his beloved wife Eurydice and the descent of Inanna, the Mesopotamian Venus, to restore her dead love, both situations involving the messenger god in a critical role as helper/escort.  This role of Mercury as psychopompos (or as the OED puts it, “guide of the soul”) symbolizes the ability of the human mind to mediate between the physical world of our bodies and senses and the inner worlds of emotions and the collective unconscious.  I think individuals with Mercury retrograde in their natal charts have a special gift for guiding others on their inner journeys, perhaps from having so much familiarity with their own inner journeys.

The mind thus bridges three realms, transporting both the unknown mysteries of our darkest psychic corners and also the divine inspirations and aspirations of the ideal (Mt. Olympus) to earth, and making them relevant in the world of the everyday and mundane.  Did Mercury have a realm of his own?  Not that I know of.  It seems to me he just belonged wherever he was.

The Flexible Mind, a Mass of Messages
Mythology is deeply symbolic and the stories that have taken shape around Mercury symbolize the human experience of our own brain.  The ancients knew through their stories about Mercury that the human mind is nothing but a messenger service for carrying communications inside our bodies.  They also understood that the human mind has a marvelous capacity to deal with life on 3 levels: heavenly, earthly and underworldly.  Without the benefit of science or proof, their understanding was metaphorical but it served to give them all they needed to know about the mind, how it works and what it is capable of, allowing them to generate knowledge we still value today.

What Does This Mean About Gemini?
Geminis are pulled in many directions at once.  They need to keep moving.  They are mentally agile and quick.  Their minds go with equal facility from higher thought to lower thought.  They enjoy this duality and use polarity to understand a thing by contrasting it with its opposite.  This flexibility, this mutability and the need to keep the message moving is the heart of Gemini’s nature.  When a Gemini learns new information and passes it on to someone else, a winged god flying swiftly somewhere pauses to smile.
