Those who are born under the fiery, fixed sign of Leo (born between July 23 and August 22) are widely known for their showmanship, creativity, and leadership. Ruled by the Sun, the very core of our solar system, Leos tend to take the center-stage and can even have their own gravitational field. But when are you the adored rock star of the Zodiac, or just being an obnoxious attention-hogger? It’s fun to have your own fan base, but do you know when to share the spotlight with others?

Leo, when you’re at your best. . .
. . . you’re one of the most magnanimous member of the Zodiac. No one can throw a party like you–you are a natural host/ess and can make anyone feel welcomed. Since you can shine like the Sun, that means everyone can’t take their eyes off of you. You take to leadership like a fish to water, and can serve as a guiding light for those to follow. You also exude confidence–whether you actually have it or not. Know the expression “Fake it until you make it?” There’s some Leo logic right there. You also have a great talent for finding the talent in others. Therefore, you make an ideal motivational coach, and can help others find their own confidence and strengths. Nobody can build up someone else’s self-esteem like a Leo!

. . . and at your worst. . .
I’ve already mentioned that your ruling planet is at the center of our solar system. That seems like an important position–and it is. However, sometimes being at the very center means that it’s easy to forget that there are others out there. Sometimes when you shine so brightly, you cast a shadow over everyone else. This may make you feel justified in your own ‘brightness,’ but be careful of devolving into a rampant narcissist. Yes, people DO notice you, and they DO follow you, but you are not the only one with something to offer in this universe. Also, there is a fine line between having star quality, and just desperate showboating. If you place yourself in the center of attention all of the time, people may actually start feeling more drained by you than dazzled.

Handling your Cancer nature
Every Leo has a performative, creative side to their personality. For you to really shine in life (and maintain your sanity) you need to find an outlet for performance. Perhaps you were born to be on the stage, have your own YouTube channel, write a blog, or anything that gets you SEEN somehow. Also, once you have found your platform, make sure to share it with others. Be generous with the spotlight! And here’s another tip for being a great performer–learn how to play to your audience, meaning: learn to listen to others. The more good feedback you get and integrate into your leadership/performance, the more your audience will grow and grow. And how rewarding is that for you, Leo!

Clueing others in about you
There are some important things that every Leo needs from others people. Leos have a social nature, and they can really give and give the same way that the Sun gives and gives its light to Earth every day. But if all of that giving goes unappreciated, than a Leo can feel quite depressed. There are mature ways to tell others that you need appreciation for all that you do for them. And when you finally get some, than you will be a very bright, and happy Leo! Another thing that Leos need from others is to be treated with respect and dignity. Even the quiet Leos out there (and there are a few!) can have a rather dignified presence. If you find others laughing at your expense or not taking you seriously enough, speak up for yourself. Respecting yourself is the first step to getting others to respect you.

  • 4/29/1969 to 6/18/1971

  • 10/15/2000 to 4/20/2001

If you don’t have Saturn in Cancer, you can find out where YOU have Saturn here.

Those born under the sign of the Water Bearer (born between January 20 and February 18) are the most future-minded and progressive people in the zodiac. At times, they can even be too ahead of their time—to the point where the rest of us are scratching our heads and wondering when they will be returning back to the mother ship. No doubt you know an Aquarius, because Aquarians are truly social creatures. The paradox of Aquarius is that they can be both extremely tolerant and extremely intolerant at the same time…

Aquarius, you are at your best. . .

…when it comes to your friends and your community. Friendship is of the utmost importance to you, and when you call someone your friend, even if they are your lover, you are actually expressing a big compliment, even affirming the permanence of the relationship. You are all about discovering your tribe and knowing everyone in it. Overall, you are tolerant of and interested in many types of people. In fact, you can be friends with almost anybody and fringe types are especially interesting. If we looked through your Facebook friends, we’d see anybody from gypsy guitarists to wall street bankers to Midwestern schoolteachers to yogis from India.

. . .and at you’re worst. . .

Your affections can be a little, um, flighty. You tend to love everyone equally, which is nice in theory but annoying to your significant other, who wants to feel more special. But public declarations of ownership are anathema to you, who can easily feel smothered by a possessive or emotional partner. And here’s another thing: your political sensibilities and rebellious tendencies mean that you complain about social evils more than is necessary for all those of us who have to hear about it. You also can be quite rigid (Aquarius is a fixed sign, after all) and self-righteous, and may feel that you must stay on the inside edge of the norm or face persecution.

Handling your Aquarian nature

Be careful of reverse psychology, since you are easily manipulated by it due to your tendency toward knee-jerk rebellion. Your habitual mistrust of authority figures could also mean that you miss out on some good mentorship. Also, know that you will adapt to the future before everyone else, so don’t get discouraged if you feel like you were born out of your time. We will all finally get what you’ve been ranting about one day—it just may take us an decade or so longer. Since you always feel like an outsider, it is crucial that you find a tribe. Hang out with like-minded people—community is where you thrive!

Clueing others in about you. . .

Practice patience with those who are a few steps behind your progressive views. And while you feel at your best with a tribe, go the extra mile to make your partner feel special. Let them know they come before anyone else, and they will be more tolerant of you spending your free time with 100 of your closest friends. At work, make an effort to maintain an attitude of respect toward your boss. It is not easy for you to be under an authority figure, but this is life, and you have to get a job (unless you are waiting for a futuristic world where robots can do all our work for us). This will build you up some cred with your boss, who may then feel less threatened when you inevitably propose those radical changes you’re always thinking of.

If you want to really understand people, you have to understand temperament.  Understanding temperament means understanding the building blocks of personality we are all made up of.  And that would be the four elements and the three qualities.

Knowing a person’s strongest element (Fire, Earth, Air or Water) can have you really “get” them and once you know how the people in your life work, you can predict how they’ll respond to things around them and what they’ll prioritize according to their values.  Then you can trust them to be who they are and you can relax in your relationships.  Knowing a person’s strongest quality (Cardinal, Fixed or Mutable) can make it easy to synergize with them in a team effort.  Their quality tells you their style of action and how they can be more effective in projects whether at work or at home.

A person’s signature sign is the combination of their strengths—their strongest quality and strongest element—and it’s just as important and significant a part of who they are as their Sun, Moon and Rising signs are.  Sometimes more significant.  The only reason most people know their Sun sign is that it’s easy to figure out.  The only reason most people don’t know their signature sign is that it needs to be figured out by an astrologer.  But this is not really hard to learn how to do and it can improve your relationships with everyone in your life.  And this is something I teach in the first session of my Chart Analysis Techniques class coming up in February.

People come to me asking about their relationships a lot and in my 20+ years of practice as an astrologer, I’ve learned that these questions aren’t always about romance or marriage.  People care about how they relate with everybody in their life—spouse, parents, children, co-workers and friends.  And the elements and qualities have a lot of answers, including:
•    what kinds of people are easiest for you to get along with
•    how do you spot those people? how does it feel to be around them?
•    what kinds of people are you drawn to and why?
•    how do you, by “filling in your missing place,” unintentionally end up drawing the very people it’s hardest for you to get along with?
•    how can you (with a little positive attention) figure out how to get along with them anyway?
•    what’s your operational style and how can you use it to be more effective in all your projects (both at work and at home)?
•    how does your operational style impact your co-workers?
•    how can you work with people who are different from you—with a sense of respect for their styles?
•    how can you get the best work out of people you manage (by knowing their styles) and feel most appreciated by those who manage you?
•    and how can you, by living in the way that’s best for your signature sign, access a deep sense of purpose and meaning in your life?

All this is incredibly useful stuff that a client can recognize in themselves and put to use right away.  I consider the signature important enough to include it in almost every reading I do and it’s usually the first thing I interpret.

Describing the elements and qualities first thing in a client’s first session serves several purposes at once.  First, it gives them golden information and insights about how to optimize their personality traits for both effectiveness and happiness. Secondly, it gives the client ways to organize things they already know about human nature into comprehensible personality traits they recognize in the people around them—and thus affects all those relationships in a good way.  So it gives them a modular personality-type system they can see at work in their life—without ever having to consult an astrologer again if they don’t want to (because I believe in teaching the client to fish, rather than spoon-feeding them fish).

Thirdly, it establishes rapport between me and the client, as the client begins to feel “gotten” and “seen” and even validated in ways that really matter.  Fourthly, it lays the foundation for our continued conversation about the client’s chart as we venture forward into further details of their personality.  Having our shared understanding of the elements and qualities to refer back to allows us to have useful conversations about anything in the chart in a short amount of time, so we can cover more ground faster.

If you liked this teaching tidbit, you would enjoy the class it came from:
Chart Analysis Techniques, beginning Feb 11, 2014.
It makes human personality comprehensible and predictable.

Taurus sign types (usually born between April 20 and May 20) are known for their peaceable ways and their patience.  But Taurus, have the people in your life learned to fear you when you get to the end of your rope?  It’s appropriate if they have, because nobody’s nicer than you when you’re feeling solid and nobody raises hell like you when you decide to.  Fortunately, you don’t decide to very often.

Taurus, when you’re at your best. . .
. . . your good traits are many and varied.  You are supportive to others, practical in your own right, a realist without being cold.  You are both grounded and warm, and you really know how to enjoy life.  You are solid and consistent; you have integrity.  When you promise, there’s no doubt you will deliver.  You’re a staunch friend, a tolerant relative, an unassuming guest and a dependable business partner.  You’re willing to take more than your share of the load, without demanding the credit you secretly desire.

. . . and at your worst. . .
. . . your patience is legendary, but it does come to an end.  Once you write someone off, it’s really over.  Once you realize a person, place or thing is not for you, you simply, pragmatically and completely remove that item from your life.  It’s as if it never existed.  Do people fear this trait in you?  They should—the only time you go to extremes is when you’re forced to.  Your uniquely Taurean finality is nature’s way of telling others that it’s best not to push you too far.  And it’s appropriate for your friends to know this, so they don’t take undue advantage of your otherwise warm and accepting nature.

Handling your Taurus nature
Honor the slow pace at which you like to live and don’t let others push you faster than you really want to go.  You are much more effective when working at your own pace.  But beware:  your stability and love of pleasure can easily convert you into a couch potato.  Get up and get moving—don’t spend all your leisure time eating and watching television.  Enjoy life, but don’t overindulge because weight is easy to put on but hard to take off.

Clueing others in about you
Reassure your friends, family and coworkers that, while your methods may be slow, you are thorough and the job will be done on time and done well.  If you know you’re going to need more time to do it right, insist on it.  Nobody brings more quality to a project than you and no doubt your co-workers have noticed that.  Avoid pushy people who try to control you.  Your best companions will be the other Earth signs:  hard-working, ambitious Capricorns and helpful, detail-oriented Virgos.  You can relax fully around them because they pull their own weight.

Of the 3 water signs, one is Cardinal, one is Fixed and one is Mutable.  When a zodiac sign is Cardinal, that means it sends its elemental energy in a directed way.  If it’s Fixed, then it consolidates and contains its elemental energy while the Mutable signs disperse and diffuse their elemental energy.  What does this mean for the 3 water signs, Cancer (Cardinal), Scorpio (Fixed) and Pisces (Mutable)?  Looking at physical symbols for the water signs is an excellent way to understand them and their relationship to each other.

Cancer, The Mountain Spring
Cancer, the Cardinal Water sign is the first to appear in the zodiacal order.  It represents directed water.  This means moving water, symbolized by a mountain spring, born out of the earth, the freshest of waters and the Water sign with the most drive.  Cancer’s Cardinality carries fresh water to ecosystems that need it, nurturing and growing life.

Cancer combines Water’s fluidity with Cardinal motivation, drive and leadership.  Cancer is the water sign with energy and direction.  Cancer has focus in a way the other two do not.  Think of a busy mother (this is, after all, the mother archetype) involved in her energetic nesting activity or think of a fierce mama bear, defending her cubs.  Think of a mother duck, lining up her chicks and leading them to water for the first time.  This sign has force, motivation and purpose to it.

Scorpio, The Lake
Scorpio is the second Water sign and it’s Fixed.  Imagine that Cancer’s mountain spring has flowed downhill and gathered momentum until it’s become a rushing river.  Now imagine all the force of that river dammed into a lake and you have Scorpio.  Another way to think of Scorpio is to look at a glass of water.  It looks placid and still but actually, the contained liquid is exerting a tremendous amount of force on all sides of the glass.  If there’s a crack in the glass anywhere, the water will find it and press through.  That’s Scorpio.

Scorpio combines the fluidity of Water with Fixed strength, solidity and continuity.  Scorpio has amazing staying power, sometimes obsessively so—in fact, Scorpio has the capacity to use obsession and compulsion to its own advantage.  And Scorpio’s tremendous sensitivity, though often experienced as a problem, is actually an advantage because it is the root of Scorpio’s ability to find weaknesses in the enemy or in the problem that can be used to overcome it.

Pisces, The Vast Ocean
All waters eventually lead to the sea. Pisces, the Mutable Water sign, combines fluid Water with flexible, ever-changing Mutability.  Mutable Water is best symbolized by the vast oceans, filled with eddies, currents and tides.  The ocean is ever-changing and always moving, but never moving in a given direction.  In the ocean, change is the constant.  And so it is with Pisces.

Pisces is the only water sign that doesn’t need a shell to protect itself.  Cancer hides in its Crab shell while Scorpio hides behind a cool exterior (occasionally coming out to sting with its Scorpion tail), but Pisces can defend itself while remaining soft.  This is because Pisces is adept at shapeshifting and mimicry.  How can you attack something when you don’t know what it is?  Pisces meets confrontation indirectly (as do all the water signs) and preserves itself by slipperiness and evasion.  Pisces is the ultimate moving target.

Which of these do you resonate with most?  Are you an energetic, bubbling spring, flowing downhill, gathering force as you go?  Or are you a still-waters-run-deep lake, sensitive to all that touches your surface?  Or are you the huge, ever-shifting ocean—permeable and connected to everything, remaining soft and open to experience?
