February’s Solar Eclipse could constitute a real spiritual cleansing or just some old-fashioned escapism as the Sun descends into the self-disintegrating world of Pisces. Juno in Capricorn and Ceres in Taurus are on hand to assist in the proceedings, offering Earthy solutions to a Watery problem. But how can they help one who is used to finding his answers at the bottom of a bottle? And what wisdom does Neptune, ruler of this eclipse’s sign, have to offer?

Does It Affect You Personally?

If your birthday is on any of the following dates, you’re most likely to experience this eclipse:
February 21 to March 3
May 24 to June 3
August 26 to September 5
November 25 to December 5

Remember, not every eclipse touches everyone, but when it does, it’s usually noticeable.  A solar eclipse is likely to be marked by an external, real-world event (unlike a lunar eclipse, which is likely to bring up strong emotions and to be experienced as a subjective event).  You may notice events happening anytime within the week surrounding the eclipse (up to a few days before or after).  The following script is just one possible way it could go.

You hear a knock at the door. You answer it. The Sun is there, swaying and looking bleary. He staggers into the house, followed by the Moon, who is shaking her head. Close behind them are the North Node in Virgo and the South Node in Pisces.
Moon: I’m sorry about this. He’s so drunk he doesn’t know what he’s doing.
Sun: I’m not drunk! I’m hungover.
South Node: You’re not drunk or hungover. You’ve been drinking so much you don’t get drunk or hungover anymore. It’s a perpetual state with you these days.
The Sun starts shaking.
Sun: Really need a drink.
The Moon’s eyes swell up with tears of empathy. The Sun crashes on the couch and the Nodes are both wearing disapproving looks.
North Node (to the Moon): You’ve been enabling his drinking.
Moon: We need to plan an intervention for him. I can’t live with this anymore.
South Node: I wholeheartedly agree. We’re going to need some help. I’m in Pisces so I’m calling in my planetary ruler, Neptune.
He snaps his fingers. There’s another knock at the door and Neptune sweeps in. She’s wearing a long, flowing gown of an uncertain color which shimmers so much it’s hard to look at her.
Neptune: I know the answer! You need a rest cure. What used to be called “taking the waters.”
Sun: Is that what they meant at that AA meeting where they said that I have a hole in my soul that I’m pouring alcohol into?
Neptune: Yes, exactly. You have forgotten who you are. You’re lost and you need to reconnect with the eternal. Spirituality is what will fill that hole. Your very own higher power.
Moon: That’s what I’ve been saying for a long time.
North Node: And if this doesn’t work, it’s rehab for you.
Neptune waves her hand and sparkles come out of her sleeve which turn your home into a spa. A giant fountain filled with healthful mineral water starts bubbling away in the middle of your living room.
Neptune: Many cultures around the world have had a tradition of bathing to cleanse both the body and soul. . .
Juno: (popping in at the door) Did somebody say cleanse? I’m in Capricorn and I think some austerity is called for here. Sun, you’ve got a buildup of toxicity. Time for a body scrub!
She offers everyone a plain, dark robe to wear. The other deities throw off their raiment and don the robes. Juno then hands out jars of scented pumice and shows the Sun a table. He immediately disrobes and gets on it. Juno, Neptune and Nodes proceed to slough off several layers of the Sun’s dead skin, helping to remove toxins from the his body.
Sun: Ow! Wow!
You: Does that feel great or terrible?
Sun: Wow! Both!
He is squirming under the forceful hold of the other gods who continue scrubbing at him until he’s quite red.
You: Um, all this nakedness is making me uncomfortable—
Neptune: We’re gods. Do you think we care about that?
Ceres (popping her head in at the door): Did someone say body scrub? I’m always up for one of those. And I’ve brought something nice for you, Sun.
Ceres in Taurus steps in. She has brought a giant tureen of chicken noodle soup she has spent hours preparing.
Ceres: I cooked a bone broth and made soup from it just for you, Sun! It’s a panacea passed down to me by my great grandmother.
You: Do goddesses have great grandmothers?
Sun: I can see I’m outnumbered here so maybe I should just surrender.
He picks up a spoon and begins digging into the soup.
Sun: Wow, this is delicious! I can’t think when was the last time I enjoyed actual food.
Moon: Yeah, take a break, Sun! You shine on the world every day but when do you get to rest?
Just then, the Sun begins to go dark.
Sun: It’s starting!
Neptune: Get him to the pool, everybody!
Moon and Neptune help him over to the pool and ease him into the warm water. The Sun sizzles and crackles a bit as he drops into the water, which warms from him being in it, making a delicious bath for everyone to enjoy. Everyone else also disrobes and steps into the hot pool, including you, despite your embarrassment, which no one seems to share. You’ve never felt anything so relaxing and the hot water makes you want to melt right down to your bones.
Sun: I’m feeling a deep sense of gratitude that all of you are in my life. And I’m feeling truly cleansed. Now, how about a drink to celebrate?
All the other planets shake their heads.
Moon: Sometimes a stressful square works better than a harmonious trine or sextile.
Juno: Yeah, if we were harder on him, it might have had some lasting impact.
Ceres: Perhaps he just wanted the attention. He is the Sun, after all, and always was something of an egomaniac.
All the planets rise from the water in a single motion, and grab Sun by the arms.
Sun: What now? Where are you taking me?
North Node: To rehab. You’re out of control.
Sun: Noooooooooooooooooooooo! I don’t have a problem!
And they exit your home en masse, dragging the Sun with them.

March’s New Moon is also an emotionally powerful lunar eclipse and it’s in the watery sign of Pisces. This is a Moon with many currents and many flavors, like a soup that’s not quite ready yet. A New Moon is a great time for beginnings but beginnings under this Moon are muddy indeed. Some of the things you begin this month may need time to cook or integrate or blend fully before they are ready for action. Instead of gobbling the soup before it’s ready, allow all the flavors to blend in the pot first—then taste it.

Does It Affect You Personally?

If your birthday is on any of the following dates, you’re most likely to experience this eclipse:
March 15-25
June 15-26
September 17-27
December 16-26

Remember, not every eclipse touches everyone, but when it does, it’s usually noticeable.  A solar eclipse is likely to be marked by an external, real-world event (unlike a lunar eclipse, which is likely to bring up strong emotions and to be experienced as a subjective event).  You may notice events happening anytime within the week surrounding the eclipse (up to a few days before or after).  The following script is just one possible way it could go.

You hear a knock at the door.  You answer it.  There stands Ceres in Capricorn, holding a giant cauldron. She brushes by you and into the kitchen, where she puts the cauldron on your stove. She is wearing a plain garment of a soft gray, and her every movement is pure efficiency. The cauldron is enormous and it covers three burners. She turns on the flame under it and uses a pitcher to add water from the sink. Then she begins pulling ingredients from the air, muttering to herself.

Ceres: Here’s some interesting karma. . . (she waves a grayish substance into the cauldron) . . .  and what about this experience? (she adds a yellow streaked with green) And here’s a twist. . . (a bluish-purple liquid pours into the cauldron from the air above it, causing bubbles and steam to rise). . . and a pinch of this! (the pinch is bright red and sparkly). You approach the cauldron, sniffing appreciatively.
You: Hey, this smells familiar! Is this the project I’m trying to create at work?
Ceres: Sure is! But it’s not ready yet. We have to let it cook awhile.
The front door bangs open and in runs Pallas Athena in Sagittarius, dressed in a bright orange jogging suit. She blows into the kitchen abruptly.
Pallas Athena: Hey guys, what’s cooking?
You: It appears to be a project I’m trying to get going at work.
Pallas Athena grabs the spoon.
Ceres, stopping her: Uh-uh-uh! Nope. Not ready yet.
Athena looks annoyed but holds back.
Athena: I’ve got a great sales plan for this project. I can sell it to your boss and your boss’ boss and your coworkers, and then I can sell it to the rest of the world too.
You: That sounds great!
Ceres: But not yet.
You: Maybe we can talk about it in the living room.
Ceres: Nope. We don’t know what it’s going to turn into. A leak would drain it of its power and change the recipe. Don’t even think about that sales stuff yet.
Athena looks irritated, but she pulls up a stool and sits on her hands.
Athena: Hey, what about this?
She pulls a thread of orange energy out of the air and offers it to Ceres who views it speculatively.
Ceres: That could work. Toss it in.
Athena does so while Ceres stirs. Together, the three of you watch the colors swirl and blend inside the cauldron, while steam brings a strange and intriguing mix of scents to your noses.
Ceres: Now off you go. Both of you. And no side conversations till it’s done. I mean it!
She shoves you out of the kitchen and Athena disappears in an orange cloud.
Three mornings later, you shuffle into the kitchen rubbing your eyes. Ceres is still there, stirring and humming to herself as the sun comes up and the birds begin to sing. She smiles at you and shakes her head.
Ceres: Not ready yet.
You fumble your way to the shower. Another few days later you wander into the kitchen again and there she is, stirring away. She dips the spoon into the cauldron and offers you a taste.
You: Wow, that’s fantastic! It really is!
Ceres shakes her head, amused.
Ceres: You really didn’t believe me, you silly human. Sometimes, you have to leave things in the hands of a deity. And you have to just walk away, trusting that the thing will sort itself out.
You: I will never forget it again.
Athena pops her head into the room for a moment and calls out: Neither will I!
Ceres: Oh yes you will, the very next time you’re in a fire sign again!

Taurus heart 2Do you love a Taurean?
Are you a Taurean in love?

Human relationships are complex, layered things.  Every sign responds to love differently and has needs that are particular to it.  Also no individual can be categorized by their Sun sign alone.  Every person is a mixed bag of astrological traits, but an emphasis on Taurus in your chart (or Ceres, its ruling planet) will result in distinctly Taurean experience.  In particular, if you have the Sun or Moon in Taurus OR if you have Venus or Juno in Taurus, this article is just for you.

Are you a Taurus in love?
Taurus, you are a sensualist.  This can make you a great lover—but you must beware of excess.  Fact is, your body is the center of your world and it’s important to maintain it in a good way by enjoying life, but not too much.  The more comfortable you are in your own skin, the better your chances of getting close to someone else’s.  Once you do, it’s important to choose someone who is capable of respecting and valuing you. . .  and your stuff.  Because, let’s face it—money is important to you, and the things you buy with it can feel like an extension of your very self.  When you marry, you’ll be reluctant to share unless your partner really understands this.

How to manage your relationships as a Taurus. . .
You’ve probably figured out that you’re not the shiniest one in the box.  That’s fine because what you bring is real and enduring and anyone who can’t appreciate that should look elsewhere.  You also bring zero drama but you tend to attract drama because you so easily step into the role of “rock others can cling to.”  The dramatic people who come around can only push your patience so far, however.  It’s a good idea, no—a GREAT idea to warn them when you are getting close to the edge of your tolerance, because once that line is crossed and you’ve had it, you’ve really had it and there’s likely no going back.

Do you love a Taurus?
Got an adorable, snuggly Taurean in your armchair or your bed?  Your Taurean beloved is dependable, but don’t for a minute allow yourself to take him for granted, or you might wake up one day and discover him gone for good.  Small doses of appreciation are not hard to give and if you do so on a daily basis, your Taurus will be a most content and happy fixture of your life together.  Frankly, he’d rather stay than go.  Small indulgences (his favorite chocolate in his underwear drawer) and regular loving touch (a lingering snuggle before getting out of bed) go a long way with your Sensualist and will keep him by the hearth for years to come.

If you have Venus or Juno in Taurus in your chart, the chances of you dating Taureans is very high. How to handle the Taurus you love. . .

  • Share not only your money with her, but also the management of it.  This is stuff she needs to learn (if she doesn’t know it already) and she’s likely to show financial aptitude.
  • Ask your Taurean what he values and really listen to what he says about it.
  • Don’t push your Taurean too far.  She might break.  Really.  Then you’re never getting her back.
  • Refrain from comments about her weight.  Believe me, she’s noticed.  Also, praise every bit of progress towards any weight-loss goals she’s expressly mentioned to you.  Keep it positive and let her be the one to bring it up.  Love her body no matter the size.
  • Encourage your Taurean to jettison the dramatic friends that drink too much and never seem to get their life together, while valuing the loyalty that keeps him connected to them.
  • Remember that your Taurean, although he looks like a pillar of strength, will need to lean on you sometimes—so when you see that he’s tiring, offer your love and support before it’s asked.

What Is Venus Retrograde?
When Venus goes retrograde, she takes our hand and pulls us into the darkness of our relationships.  A retrograde period of any planet is a retrospective of that planet’s themes.  It is like going into the deep, dark cave of oneself in whatever area of life is covered by the planet that is retrograde.  It is a time of moving backward, perhaps of going back to pick up pieces lost in the past.  It is a retrieval, a turning inward, perhaps a letting-go.  Since Venus’ domain is relationships, this turning inward will happen in that domain.

The Tale of Eros and Psyche—Forbidden Love

The story of Psyche’s marriage to Eros, her loss of him and her journey to recover him, is an apt metaphor for the retrograde journey of Venus.  Here is her story.

Psyche, whose name means “soul,” was a mortal woman of great beauty, beauty to rival even Venus-Aphrodite herself.  People came from miles around to worship Psyche and bring her gifts.  This aroused the anger of Aphrodite, for no mere mortal deserves to be worshipped as a goddess.  Aphrodite sent her son Eros (Cupid), who represents living desire, to punish Psyche.  He came upon her when she was sleeping, and fed her the drink of Bitterness, then touched her with his arrow, that she might fall in love with the next hideous creature that came near.  But in doing so, Eros was grazed by his arrow himself, and he became struck with her beauty, so he gave her the drink of Joy also.

Psyche was now cursed.  Everyone wanted to worship her but no one wanted to marry her.  She was unloved.  Her parents consulted an oracle, which said, “she is destined for no mortal husband” and advised them to leave her on a mountain top where a monster would claim her.  While her parents were dismayed, Psyche herself submitted and went to the mountain top.  There she was swept away by a friendly breeze to a marvelous castle, filled with attentive but invisible servants.  There also she met her bridegroom, who was loving, affectionate, charming and passionate.  He visited her daily, but only in the dark.  He gave her everything and required only that she never ask to see his face.

Psyche was allowed a visit from her two sisters, who were jealous and concerned at the unusual marriage she had made.  “What,” they exclaimed, “you only see your husband in the dark?  How do you know he isn’t some kind of frightful monster who only wants to do you harm?”  Their suspicion persuaded Psyche to break her promise to her husband and make an attempt to view him in the light.

One evening, after a fabulous (but unlit) meal and the same splendorous lovemaking Psyche had come to expect from her mate, he fell asleep in her arms.  She gently crept out from under him and, lighting a lamp, held it over him to see what he looked like.  No one was more surprised than she to see that the being she was married to was not at all a monster who wanted to hide his face in the dark, but the very God of Love himself!  She fell into a reverie, feeding her hungry eyes on his features.  Just then a drop of oil from the lamp fell and landed on his perfect shoulder, scorching him and awaking him.  “Now you’ve done it!  Love cannot live with suspicion,” he cried, in anger and regret, as he flew out the window and into the clouds.  He went back to his mother, whom he had defied in living with Psyche.

This tale–and its meaning in your life–to be continued tomorrow . . .
