benfranklin2Have you ever wondered why Aquarius is called the Water-Bearer, when it’s an Air sign? Air is the right element for Aquarius because this sign is unemotional and concerned with things intellectual and abstract, whereas the three Water signs are emotional and warm-hearted in their nature. But if Aquarius is an Air sign, why does its name have “aqua” in it, which comes from a Latin root meaning water?

Uranus, planetary ruler of Aquarius
Aquarius is ruled by Uranus, a consummately Airy planet. Uranus rules electricity, lightning, computers, electronic media, technology, the internet, networking, social media and everything virtual. It is associated with innovation, invention, social change, political activism, humanitarianism, edge cases and all things radical. Uranus’ process is best described using phrases like “cascade,” “domino effect,” “tipping point,” “reframing” and “paradigm shift.”

With the discovery of Uranus, Aquarius gets a ruler of its own
In the history of astrology, Aquarius has been a late-blooming sign, being among the few that had to share planetary rulership with another sign for most of recorded history, that other sign being Capricorn. The discovery of Uranus in the middle 1700’s was followed by a scramble among astrologers to determine which sign Uranus might rule. After some thought, astrologers realized that Uranus rules Aquarius. This occurred several millennia after Aquarius was first named by ancient astrologers.

When a planet is discovered and ascribed to a sign, new understanding of that sign becomes possible and traits that never made sense before begin to fit into the picture of that sign’s nature. A planet’s discovery is also often accompanied by a general emergence in the collective consciousness of things associated with that new planet.

Uranus, ruler of electricity
Uranus rules electricity and everything that runs on it. With the discovery of Uranus came the discovery that lightning contains power. The harnessing of electricity followed—and with it an outpouring of things designed to utilize it. Electric lighting changed our lives radically, and then the era of telecommunications began, including telegraph, telephone, wired and wireless communications, followed by computers, software and then the internet. If Saturn (Aquarius’ traditional ruler) rules mechanistic machines, Uranus (Aquarius’ modern ruler) rules electronic ones.

Uranus has given us a lot of things that have no perceptible physicality, but which affect our lives greatly–as is appropriate for an Air planet. And its sign Aquarius has benefitted from a new understanding of its planetary ruler. This rulership explains why Aquarians have always been progressive, inventive and unlikely to fit the mold—they have always marched to a different drum, beaten by Uranus. Because Uranus has finally emerged into collective consciousness, Aquarians have come into their own. And just in time for the Age of Aquarius too!

Currents, waves, brain waves
You might say our bodies run on electricity as well as fuel. Electricity runs in currents, whether direct or alternating. Our electric brains also run in currents, creating brain waves that are non-physical, yet measurable by an electroencephalogram or EEG. The electricity in our body moves through our nervous system–our nerves fire impulses that send information which tell body parts what to do or what is happening to parts of our body: this feels cold, that feels heat, there is danger, here is food! Our brains in many ways resemble computers and you might even say that our invention of computers is an attempt to create a brain much like our own. Buildup and release of electric charge in the body leads to nervous tension and twitchiness–another Uranian phenomenon.

Uranus, cascade effect and cracking your knuckles
Uranus also rules the process of paradigm shift: the Uranian process involves a buildup of tension or charge, leading to a cascade effect and a sudden shift to a new level or new framework. Each zodiacal sign rules an area of the body–Aquarius rules the ankles and the joints. The joints are intersections, forming a bodily network (a Uranian word) through which our nerves carry electric (another Uranian word) impulses that relay messages (an Air word). Our joints also contain pockets of gas (Air) that pop when we crack our knuckles, which activity is usually considered to be somewhat eccentric (yet another Uranian word). A buildup of gas to a pop-release is a sort of cascade effect leading to a state-based shift and this is Aquarius’ core process.

Water equals waves, as a concept
Now that we’ve established that Uranus is connected with electricity and that both Uranus and electricity were unknown when Aquarius was named, take a moment to think back with me to ancient times, when the zodiacal signs were being discovered and described. My guess is that, in naming Aquarius, the ancients were attempting to explain the nature of a sign that generates waves, fires electrical impulses and creates cascades, but their only reference point for understanding waves was water. They didn’t have the benefit of our modern understanding of electricity, but it’s clear to me from today’s viewpoint that the Water Bearer’s waves are a crude understanding of electricity. It’s not about water waves, but brain waves and electrical waves.

Another meaning for “making waves”
There is another meaning for “making waves” that’s very relevant to Aquarius: it means upsetting the normal routine, “rocking the boat” or bringing change. Aquarius is the rabble-rouser, the rebel or revolutionary who brings change in waves. The discovery of Uranus was accompanied by revolutions on two continents. Aquarius is known for its tendency to rattle cages and bring about new ideas that trigger a state-based change known as a paradigm shift. Aquarius gathers groups and networks of people together under the banner of a shared ideal or paradigm, and presses for social change. Aquarius is the political activist, agitating for the needs of their group. Aquarius well and truly makes waves, both electrical and social.

Time for a new name?
The ancients weren’t capable of this understanding of Aquarius in the way that we are. But we, from our modern viewpoint, can see how all these various phenomena are connected and add up to a single clear theme: Aquarius is about buildup and release of charge. Aquarius makes waves. For this reason, I think we should change Aquarius’ name from the Water-Bearer to the Wave-Maker, because it’s simply more accurate and descriptive of Aquarius’ true nature and behavior. It just fits.

Those born under the sign of the Water Bearer (born between January 20 and February 18) are the most future-minded and progressive people in the zodiac. At times, they can even be too ahead of their time—to the point where the rest of us are scratching our heads and wondering when they will be returning back to the mother ship. No doubt you know an Aquarius, because Aquarians are truly social creatures. The paradox of Aquarius is that they can be both extremely tolerant and extremely intolerant at the same time…

Aquarius, you are at your best. . .

…when it comes to your friends and your community. Friendship is of the utmost importance to you, and when you call someone your friend, even if they are your lover, you are actually expressing a big compliment, even affirming the permanence of the relationship. You are all about discovering your tribe and knowing everyone in it. Overall, you are tolerant of and interested in many types of people. In fact, you can be friends with almost anybody and fringe types are especially interesting. If we looked through your Facebook friends, we’d see anybody from gypsy guitarists to wall street bankers to Midwestern schoolteachers to yogis from India.

. . .and at you’re worst. . .

Your affections can be a little, um, flighty. You tend to love everyone equally, which is nice in theory but annoying to your significant other, who wants to feel more special. But public declarations of ownership are anathema to you, who can easily feel smothered by a possessive or emotional partner. And here’s another thing: your political sensibilities and rebellious tendencies mean that you complain about social evils more than is necessary for all those of us who have to hear about it. You also can be quite rigid (Aquarius is a fixed sign, after all) and self-righteous, and may feel that you must stay on the inside edge of the norm or face persecution.

Handling your Aquarian nature

Be careful of reverse psychology, since you are easily manipulated by it due to your tendency toward knee-jerk rebellion. Your habitual mistrust of authority figures could also mean that you miss out on some good mentorship. Also, know that you will adapt to the future before everyone else, so don’t get discouraged if you feel like you were born out of your time. We will all finally get what you’ve been ranting about one day—it just may take us an decade or so longer. Since you always feel like an outsider, it is crucial that you find a tribe. Hang out with like-minded people—community is where you thrive!

Clueing others in about you. . .

Practice patience with those who are a few steps behind your progressive views. And while you feel at your best with a tribe, go the extra mile to make your partner feel special. Let them know they come before anyone else, and they will be more tolerant of you spending your free time with 100 of your closest friends. At work, make an effort to maintain an attitude of respect toward your boss. It is not easy for you to be under an authority figure, but this is life, and you have to get a job (unless you are waiting for a futuristic world where robots can do all our work for us). This will build you up some cred with your boss, who may then feel less threatened when you inevitably propose those radical changes you’re always thinking of.

Aquarius heart 3Do you love an Aquarius?
Are you an Aquarius in love?

Human relationships are complex, layered things.  Every sign responds to love differently and has needs that are particular to it.  Also no individual can be categorized by their Sun sign alone.  Every person is a mixed bag of astrological traits, but an emphasis on Aquarius in your chart (or Uranus, its ruling planet) will result in distinctly Aquarian experience.  In particular, if you have the Sun or Moon in Aquarius OR if you have Venus or Juno in Aquarius, this article is just for you.

Are you an Aquarius in love?
As an Aquarius you are a true humanitarian.  This is a double-edged sword, because you love everybody a little, so it’s hard to love one person a lot.  Trying to concentrate your affections on just one person feels like cheating all the other deserving people in your life and it seems tantamount to cutting off your friendships (something you’d never do).  This habit of spreading yourself around will earn you many friends and quite a few frustrated lovers who want to be special to you and don’t quite feel that they get their due.  They may even call you superficial.

How to manage your relationships as an Aquarius. . .
Fact is, you march to your own drummer.  Over your dating history, from the series of bumps and bruises you’ve experienced, you’ve developed an ideology about what love is and how it should be expressed.  This ideology is hard-won and you’re probably attached to it.  The thing is, your ideology may not match the assumptions your lover came into the relationship with.  You’ll question your partner’s assumptions and rattle their cage.  If your partner has Venus or Juno in Aquarius, this may be exactly what they signed up for.  If not, they’d best run for the hills.

Do you love an Aquarius?
Have you noticed that your Aquarian beloved has a tendency to spread himself around?  It’s hard to feel that you are special when your partner’s affection for you seems to be on a par with his affection for his mom, his neighbor and his neighbor’s dog.  Your Aquarian, whether male or female, may be uncomfortable with public displays of affection and while their coolness may hurt your ego, it’s not necessarily a statement of how much they really love you.

And here’s another thing:  for your Aquarian, relationships may always diverge from the pedestrian norm—and that may be exactly as she wants it.  She likes to do things differently and even to experiment, so when accused of being downright weird, it doesn’t hurt her feelings—it just brings a cute smile to her lips.  Infuriating?  Yes.  Adorable?  Also yes.

How to handle the Aquarius you love. . .

  • Remember that your Aquarian needs freedom.
  • Love your Aquarian’s quirks.  They are what make her herself.
  • When your Aquarian reacts in a rebellious way, he is probably feeling trapped.  Back off and give him room to breathe.  His rational side will once again assert itself.
  • Resist the urge to use reverse psychology to get agreement from your Aquarian.  That button might break in the “on” position from using it too much.
  • Encourage your Aquarian to love more deeply and sustainedly, but don’t press him beyond his comfort zone.  That’s his job.
  • Remember that your Aquarian values friendship above all, and if she calls you her best friend, that’s the highest compliment in her lexicon.

When astrologers want to understand the archetype that underlies a zodiac sign, they look to the mythological stories that center around the deity that rules the sign.  To understand Gemini, we look to Mercury, ruler of thought and ideas, wearer of the winged cap.  To understand Libra, we look to Venus, goddess of love and beauty.  Her nature as siren, tempestuous lover and self-indulgent hedonist helps us understand both Libra and Taurus, the two signs Venus rules.  Clearly Venus and Mercury were well-identified by the ancients and interpretations of their movements that worked thousands of years ago still work today.  All the other bodies visible with the naked eye (the Sun and Moon, Mars, Jupiter Saturn) were also clearly identified and associated with the right archetypal principles and so their zodiac signs are well-understood.  But astrologers have had a challenge when it comes to Aquarius.  This sign’s ruling planet, Uranus, may have been misnamed.

The deity Uranus is not one that has much mythological tradition surrounding him. There are not many stories to look to in discovering the meaning of this sky god.  We know he was father to Saturn and that Saturn overthrew him, we know he was a primordial sky god.  And that’s about it.  No long tales to tell, no intricate personality quirks.  And the things we do know about Uranus only fit Aquarius marginally.  It’s occurred to one astrological thinker that there is a different deity whose stories and personality do fit the qualities of Aquarius, and that would be Prometheus.  The astrologer is Richard Tarnas, whose discovery and line of thinking are detailed in his book, Prometheus the Awakener.

All of this gets me to my point, which is:  Aquarians, the myths of Uranus do not have a lot to tell you about your own nature.  But the myths of Prometheus do.  Here is his story . . .

Our tale begins in a time before human beings existed, when the world was fresh and new, and populated by gigantic gods called Titans.

Prometheus was one of the Titans.  Animals had already been created and they were wonderful, but Prometheus wanted to make something better, so he created Man out of clay.  He made Man in the shape of a god, which was rather arrogant of him and resulted in Man thinking a bit much of himself as well.  By the time Man was made, all the gifts of life (wings, feathers, speed, strength, fins, etc.) had already been disbursed among the animals, so that there was no special gift for Man.  Prometheus had an idea what to do about this, so he took himself to Mt. Olympus, the dwelling-place of the gods, and got some fire and gave that to Man.  This was an incredible advantage over the other creatures, because Man could keep himself warm, cook his food, and make tools using fire, and the other creatures couldn’t do that.  Fire gave Man enough safety and leisure to cultivate arts and commerce.

(Here I could tell the story of Pandora, the first Woman, but I’ve told it elsewhere, so I’ll skip over it for now.)

According to Bullfinch’s Mythology, Prometheus is represented by the Greek & Roman poets as “a friend to mankind.”  But Prometheus’ gift was gained at a price:  Jupiter (Jove to the Greeks) was angered at the theft of fire and he, as king of the gods, punished Prometheus.  Prometheus was chained to a huge rock where every day a giant eagle came and ate his liver from his still-living body.  Every night the liver grew back—so this was an unending torment, because Prometheus was a god and could not die.  Prometheus was in possession of a secret about which of Jupiter’s offspring would eventually overthrow him.  Jupiter swore that Prometheus might be released if he would reveal the future usurper’s name.  Prometheus refused and stubbornly endured his punishment.

Prometheus’ release eventually came, through the actions of Hercules and Chiron—but that is a different story.

The tale of Prometheus contains a number of themes that connect with the Aquarian temperament and mark him as the originator (planetary ruler) of that temperament.

1. Prometheus loves humanity.  The sign of Aquarius is well-known for producing individuals who are “people persons.”  Some Aquarians love humanity more as a concept and less in terms of one-on-one relating, but Aquarians are famous for standing up for human rights.
2. Prometheus demonstrated a refusal to support monarchy, holding out instead for decentralizing power.  This strongly parallels the Aquarian tendency toward political activism and democracy.  Aquarius comes down solidly on the side of the people as opposed to Leo, its opposite sign in the zodiac, which represents monarchy and centralized power.  The best illustration of this is that around the time of the discovery of the planet we call Uranus (which, I’m arguing, should be called Prometheus), revolutions began happening as a phenomenon.  I’m speaking of the French and American revolutions.  The people joined together and rose up as one against an oppressive monarch, on two continents at the same time.  These revolutions were soon followed by more revolutions, in Russia, China and elsewhere.  Since the middle 1700s, revolution exists as a thing in itself, as it never before used to.  When Uranus was discovered, the Revolutionary that lay hidden in humanity’s collective unconscious reared up and was activated.
3. The theft of fire from the gods and the giving of fire, with all its power, to humanity, was an act of rebellion on the part of Prometheus.  He was a rebellious god, stuck in his own ideas and doing his own thing.  He was a trickster.  In a similar vein, the planet Uranus brings out a quality of rebellion in people when it’s strong in their charts.  Uranian types tend to be rebellious, reactive and strong-minded.  They sometimes enjoy rule-breaking for its own sake.
4. Fire itself represents insight, inspiration and one central symbol for Aquarius is lightening.  We speak of thoughts having the speed of lightening and ideas striking us like lightening.  Thought itself is the passing of electrical impulses in our brains—and it does happen at a lightning-pace.  Sudden insight and the overthrow of old thought-structures is at the very heart of the archetype of Aquarius—and it’s the source of the famous Aquarian inventiveness.

To live fully into one’s sun sign it is sometimes necessary to invite a god into one’s life.  Aquarians, your god is above all things a rebel, a revolutionary, a paradigm-shifter and rule-breaker.  Your god loves humanity, even when that’s not the popular thing to do.  Your god is willing to take the hit for humanity and endure great suffering and pain in order to take a stand for humanity’s right to be just a little bit godlike.  Your god gave us the gift of startling ideas and brilliance.  He deserves the biggest temple you can build him.

All Air types (people with a strong Gemini, Libra or Aquarius influence in their chart) have some things in common.  They tend to live in their heads and they love abstract thoughts.  They prefer a beautiful theory to a hard reality and they are interested in communication, sharing ideas and networking.  But there are some interesting differences that show up when Air is strong in the chart of a woman as opposed to that of a man.

There’s a marked tendency for Air-type males to be strongly intellectual (leaning toward math and science) and to not develop their social skills, while Air-type females tend to be strongly social and not as math-and-science-oriented as their male equivalents.  Why should this be?  Are men and women really so different physically that the same astrological influences should bear out different results in the bodies of two different natives?  Why do Air-type men grow up to be techies and scientists, while Air-type women grow up to be social mavens?  Why do Air-type women sometimes talk so much and say so little, while Air-type men can be logical to the point of being cold, critical and boring?

It’s not because of biology—it’s that nasty little virus sexism at work again.  Just when we thought we were living in modern times and had evolved into a post-feminist utopia, how uncomfortable to discover that we’re actually still promulgating sexist ideas and limiting our children.

Even today, it’s still ok for men to be smart in ways it’s not ok for women to be.
Boys get rewarded for smarts, while girls get rewarded for social skills.  While both boys and girls are encouraged academically in their younger years, the further the education goes, the less women are encouraged to pursue their studies, especially when it comes to the hard sciences.  This is much, much less true for younger generations, but older generations have a longer view of how far women have come and how far there still is to go.  A potential employer still looks at a woman and thinks, “she’s going to take off and have a family at some point; she’s a flight risk for my company.”

Conversely, women still get taught social skills in a way that men are not.  While mothers explain to daughters the intricacies of social interaction, sons get tossed out into the world to fend for themselves socially, with nothing but their conscience to guide them, and no actual savvy.  This leaves males clueless in many social situations, feeling that women are running circles around them and that every social interaction has layers of meaning that are mysterious and inscrutable.  The result is that an Airy man, who has lots to say, can talk endlessly about his ideas and have no idea that he’s lost his audience.

I’ve done a lot of readings for Air-type women and believe me—they know how smart they really are and they know that all the gossiping, chattering and superficial bantering is survival behavior and they are tired of not being taken seriously as an intellectual force.  And readings I’ve done for Air-type men have clued me in that, while they easily identify with their intelligence, that intense focus on the life of the mind can result in a boorish cluelessness that is very off-putting to exactly the people they’d most like to impress.

If you are one of these Airy folks, you might want to ask yourself if you’re living the full potential of your Air nature.  It’s your God-given right to be both intellectual and social, but because of lingering gender roles you may have to fight for that right.  For both genders, the key to Air lies in good questions.  Ask intelligent questions as if you really want to know.  Be curious—both about people and ideas.  In conversation draw people out.  The wonder and curiosity we all had when we were small is the heart of Air intellectual and social skills.  Learn to ask good questions and you’re set.  If you have an Airy person in your life, encourage them to develop both sets of Air skills.  If you have an Air-type child, it’s your duty to counteract these social trends and make sure your boy learns to communicate warmly with others and your girl takes her smarts seriously.

Thank goodness these things are changing, and rapidly.  Today it’s more common to see a proud “geek girl” who worries more about her grades or her research than her hairstyle or the latest gossip.  And it’s more common to meet a boy who is socially adept without seeming too much of a “sensitive New Age guy.”  Perhaps a balance will be struck at last.

Solutions for Air-Gone-Wrong

In my recent post Personality Flaws of the Four Elements I described ways the 4 Elements can go wrong, each according to its own nature.

How To Know If Air Has You Lost In A Cloud

Air is the intellectual element and we all know that a mind is a terrible thing to waste—yet it is also possible to use your mind too much, for example in times when your heart or body would serve better.  Your Air has gone wrong when:

  • You retreat to your head so much and get so abstracted that people around you wonder where you’ve gone and call you an “absent-minded professor.”
  • Physical reality annoys you.  You are frustrated at how hard it is to turn a theory into a reality—why can’t things just be the way you think they should?  And so you criticize things and people that don’t live up to your ideals.
  • Your need to appear smart has overreached your ability to actually converse with others, share ideas and be genuinely curious about perspectives that differ from your own.  This alienates you from people, which is a shame because stimulating conversation is exciting to you.
  • Your school success didn’t translate into the world beyond academics and you are still wondering why intelligence and problem-solving abilities aren’t enough to bring recognition and career advancement.
  • People call you cold or unapproachable (even though you have a sparkling wit) because you have little warmth.

Solution One:  Balance Air With The Other 3 Elements
If your Air is distorted, the other elements can help restore balance.  The natural antidote for the coolness and excessive objectivity of Air is the warmth and emotional approachability of Water.  When your Airy side causes you to distance yourself from events around you, draw on your Watery side and involve yourself emotionally in what you are experiencing (even though your Airy side may find this uncomfortable).

Earth helps Air move from the theoretical to the practical.  Earth demands that Air’s ideas be implemented in ways that are useful and pragmatic.  Earth physicalizes Air’s theories, tests them and proves their effectiveness.

Fire brings to Air a much-needed enthusiasm.  There comes a time when thought necessarily leads to action and while Air could sit around the planning table endlessly batting ideas about, Fire will leap in and begin a thing.  This may lead to failure the first or even the hundredth time, but Fire knows the importance of taking action.

Solution Two:  Emphasize Healthy Air
If you emphasize healthy Air and fill your life with ways your Air is positively expressed, there will be no room for unhealthy Air.  This elegant solution gently allows negative Air traits to fall away as a side-effect of your emphasis on positive Air.  You might call this solution “Air -Fu.”  Here are some examples:

  • Be endlessly curious.  Become a reservoir, a roundhouse for information.  Regard all data as potentially useful.
  • Air may not be very warm and fuzzy, but it is very social.  Make friends—lots of them—and bond with them around mutually interesting concepts and theories.
  • Share ideas with absolutely everyone, regardless of how “smart” they are or how well-researched their information is.  Treasure each new nugget you learn.
  • Use your capacity for distancing yourself to help you connect with others, not push them away.  Because intimacy includes appropriate space, you can find the right distance to make you comfortable with intimacy.
  • Meditate.  It gives the brain a much-needed break.

Coming up next:  Are You Drowning In Water?

“The needs of the many outweigh needs of the few—or the one.”  -Spock

In my previous post I introduced the 3 characters in the present Triple conjunction in Aquarius:  Jupiter, Chiron and Neptune.  In this post I’ll talk about what it means that they are in Aquarius (see more posts on the nature of Aquarius here).

Aquarius Is About Change
This sign is associated with breakthrough, change and experimentation.  Aquarius is radical, progressive and drawn toward the cutting edge.  This Fixed Air sign loves ideas and abstract thought—a well-thought-out idea is valued for its own sake.  Aquarius is associated with breakthrough thinking and paradigm-shifting, giving access to the “Eureka!” experience—that moment of insight when the light bulb goes off over your head.

Aquarius Is About Science and Technology
Aquarius (and its ruler, Uranus) is the Scientist (sometimes the Mad Scientist!), the Brilliant One, the Nerd.  This sign is experimental, loving to step back and look at things objectively.  Aquarius is cool and collected, intellectual and logical.  Uranus rules electricity and networks and Aquarius loves the rapid changes and developments in the computer field.  Having to keep current with computer and software updates is a joy to Aquarius.  This sign is fascinated with all things scientific and technological.

Aquarius Is About Community and Networks
Let’s face it, Aquarius loves people—but at a distance.  Aquarius is the Humanitarian. the Social Activist, sometimes even the Scapegoat—willing to take the hit for the progress of the team. This is the sign of the Rebel or Revolutionary, the one who overthrows the King (Leo, Aquarius’ polar opposite) and decentralizes power, bringing it to the people.  But Aquarius has difficulty getting intimate with actual individuals in real time.  Connecting a little with a lot of people while keeping them at a cool distance is much more comfortable for this ultra-gregarious sign.

The Aquarian Dark Side
It’s easy to see how this sign, while associated with beautiful themes, can also go too far.  Aquarius can be overly analytical, cold, emotionally detached, preferring hard logic over feelings or even inhuman to the point of being a sociopath who does not feel a part of the rest of humanity.  Embracing social change can go too far, resulting in a radical who wants overthrow of the current order regardless of consequences or a social changer who wants their group’s agenda forwarded with no regard for the cost to others.  Aquarius is prone to groupthink, to loss of individualism within the group-mind.

What It Looks Like When Neptune, Chiron and Jupiter Act In Your Life Through The Medium Of Aquarius
Neptune, the Spiritual Awakener, acting through Aquarius will bring you into contact with groups of people for the purpose of spiritual growth.  Neptune in Aquarius says:  “I am the spinner of dreams and fantasies.  In Aquarius I’m dreaming of ideal communities, places where people can come together and feel a sense of universal connectedness in humanitarian causes.  Some of the visions I dream up may not work in material reality and may lead to disappointment, but I’ll dream them anyway.”  Neptune’s dark side expressed through Aquarius can bring you into contact with groups of deluded people who together subscribe to a shared point of view that alienates them from the rest of humanity, instead of connecting them to it.  This is the sort of place people end up when they crave acceptance and will do anything (or believe anything) to get it.

When Chiron, the Wounded Healer, is in Aquarius, the time is ripe for healing past experiences of groups.  Chiron in Aquarius says:  “I’m going to get you into situations where you feel like an outsider so you can deal with the sense of alienation and rejoin the human family.  I’ll also bring opportunities for joining groups that give you a sense of community in areas of your life where you may have not thought it possible.  If ultimately you come to the understanding that we’re all in this together, my work will be well done.”  The dark side of Chiron in Aquarius is the witch hunt, a situation where one person is cast out, misunderstood and the group is pitted against them.  A witch hunt is hard to distinguish from a intervention, where a group gathers to show an individual his own shadow, because they love him and want him to stop some destructive behavior.  Whether a situation is a witch hunt or an intervention often depends on your perspective and whether or not you take a victim stance.  It is possible to endure something you may at first call a witch hunt and ultimately to respond to it in a way that make you more whole, not more broken.

And last, but definitely not least, Jupiter in Aquarius will create opportunities for playful, growthful and expansive group experiences.  Jupiter says, “Go do a workshop, because your personal growth will go better with other people around.  Throw a party and have fun with like-minded folks.  Gain confidence in your ability to hang out and take up space with lots of people around.  Expand your social network and enjoy all the varieties of people you’ll meet.”  Jupiter’s Aquarian shadow side has to do with grabbing the group spotlight and puffing oneself up to be bigger than others.  Jupiter in Aquarius secretly thinks, “of course everyone is equal—but some are more equal than others,” and sees himself and his contribution to the group as superior.  This attitude can be leavened with a little humbleness to bring Jupiter back onto a level with his peers.

What is the mission of the Jupiter-Chiron-Neptune conjunction?  How can we use it to make our lives better?  Tomorrow I’ll finish up this 3-post series by bringing it all together.  And maybe we’ll overhear a dialogue among these 3 planets.

One of the central traits of Aquarius is inventiveness. Aquarian (aka Uranian) “types”* tend to come up with new, cutting-edge ideas. How do they do it? And how can you do it too?

1. Love Ideas For Their Own Sake
Aquarians simply love thinking. They love using their brains to tease out the pieces of a problem, to make connections, find patterns and eliminate possibilities. For them, analyzing ideas is more than just fun—it’s a way of life. If you love thinking and ideas, you are more than halfway to breakthrough thinking.

2. Think Outside The Box
Aquarians/Uranians know instinctively that nothing new can be made from assembling pieces of the old. They reach outside the confines of conventional expected thinking styles and out into the wilds of the unknown. Be willing to see beyond the limitations society agrees you have and the limitations you imagine for yourself.

3. Embrace Chaos
“I tell you: one must have chaos within oneself, to give birth to a dancing star,” said Nietszche, an Aquarian type. Chaos is scary. Order is predictable. But you can’t get to a truly new idea from remaining inside the predictable. Uranians (secretly or not) enjoy a little chaos. To emulate them, next time something chaotic happens in your life, don’t close down or run away. Instead, lean into it. The solution might be nearby, behind a wall you don’t know is there.

4. Make It An Experiment
Form a hypothesis, then try to prove or disprove it. Stand at a distance from your subject. Take a truly objective perspective. Ask yourself, “How would this experiment work in a different environment, country, culture?” Or “What if I had to explain this idea to someone who knew nothing at all about it, like a Martian?” Ask open-ended questions, rather than closed (yes/no) questions. Embrace the mind of the beginner.

5. Do The Weird Thing
Be willing to look like a weirdo in your experimentation. It is rumored that Einstein changed his shirt so infrequently that his wife sometimes had to cut it off him. He didn’t have time for worrying about whether this made him look strange. He was busy thinking new thoughts. If you are concerned about how you look, breakthrough thinking might not be for you.

These things are things Aquarians do effortlessly, like breathing. They cannot seem to help it. Fortunately, everyone has at least a little Uranian electricity in their chart, giving us all access to startling, new ideas, when we choose to open to them.

* Remember that when I say “Aquarians” I do not just mean individuals who have the Sun in Aquarius, although some of those might be strong enough types to resonate with what I’m saying. To qualify as an Aquarian type, you might simply have Uranus, the ruler of Aquarius, placed strongly in your chart. An astrologer can look up your chart and tell you.

Is every Aquarian a “people person?”  Probably not, but you can bet every Aquarian has a humanitarian streak that runs pretty deep.  At their best, Aquarians are gregarious, highly social creatures.  They believe in human rights and they take an egalitarian view.  They think power should be shared among many, rather than gripped in the hands of a few, privileged individuals.

As I’ve said before, not every person is true to the temperament of their sun sign, because your sun sign is not all you are.  So take this with a grain of salt.  Having said that, I can speak strongly, despite the fact that Aquarians tend to hate being categorized.

No, strike that.  Aquarians will happily categorize themselves.  They just don’t like other people to do it.  Your neighborhood child of Uranus will stand up and be counted for a cause she believes in.  Uranians love to be connected to and to further the interests of social groups they feel a part of, because everyone “has rights too.”  Arguing for rights and political agendas of fringe groups are especially delightful to Aquarians.  They can become quite impassioned and up in arms.  Political activism appeals to them.

Aquarius takes the Libran ideal of fairness to a new level.  Libra is the air sign that comes before Aquarius in the wheel of the zodiac, and Libra is very much about fairness and balance between two.  That’s why Libra enjoys playing devil’s advocate.  Aquarius, by contrast, is about fairness among many.  That’s why Aquarius is so egalitarian—the Uranian impulse is to treat everyone equally.

This can take frustrating forms in an Aquarian’s private life.  Sometimes an Aquarian may be uninterested in or resistant to viewing one person as “special.”  This is a source of annoyance to his girlfriend or wife, who may feel, oddly enough, that being loved equally with the Aquarian’s mother, his sister, all his friends and neighbors and his pets is not really enough to satisfy her.

Oh, by the way, people commonly think Aquarius is a water sign.  It’s not: it’s an air sign.  Aquarians love ideas, concepts, abstract thought.  They are not very emotional (as water signs are).  When an Aquarian becomes passionate, it’s usually because an idea has gripped her.  Pure feelings can be very uncomfortable for a Uranian to encounter in themselves or in others, causing a response that can be cool, logical, even oddly scientific, as the Aquarian puts the feeling under a microscope to examine it and find out what makes it tick.

Aquarians may have their faults (as all signs do), but they are the force of the future.  They are willing to stand for a cause, to fight and even to die for what they truly believe in.  They push all of society forward, right to the cutting edge.  Find your neighborhood Aquarian and ask him about his ideals for “his people.”  Prepare for a very interesting conversation.
