Jupiter and Chiron have met at the Edge of the World.  It’s a misty place where the physical world meets the metaphysical one.  Some of the passageways you already know about are there, such as the wardrobe that leads to Narnia, Dr. Who’s tardis and other magical entry-points.  Jupiter is wearing the long, flowing robes of a priest of no particular denomination—he looks like he could lead a dharma talk or deliver a sermon.  Chiron is wearing nothing but a piece of cloth wrapped around his middle, and carrying a staff with a fearsome creature’s face atop it—perhaps a totem animal, the face of an ancestor, or a defeated enemy’s head.  The two meet and shake hands firmly.

Jupiter:  Shall we get to work?
Chiron:  Yes, of course.
Chiron waves his staff and the air ripples, as if there is a heat-induced mirage.  Then a doorway appears, a portal.  Inside the portal there is mist—it is impossible to see very far and all the colors are in softened shades of gray.
Chiron:  Are they ready?
Jupiter:  On my side, they’ve been lining up for centuries.  And on yours?
Chiron:  There’s no knowing, because time doesn’t exist there.
Jupiter claps his hands three times, and suddenly there is a line of people extending for miles.  Each stands with hands at sides, eyes closed and wearing a simple white shift.  They are obviously asleep.
Jupiter (beckoning):  Come forward, please.
The first Human steps forward haltingly.
Jupiter:  What is your wish?
First Human:  I wish to relieve karma in my family line.  I have an ancestor whose pain I have been carrying and whose lessons I am to learn.  I wish to check in with this ancestor.
Jupiter:  Your wish is a fine one.  You may go to the portal.
First Human walks awkwardly to the portal, where Chiron awaits.
Chiron:  I have found your ancestor.  You may speak with her.  Step in and I will make sure you return safely to your waking life.
First Human touches his hand in gratitude and steps through the portal.
Second Human steps forward.
Jupiter:  What is your wish?
Second Human:  I wish to communicate with the spirit of my unborn child, to make a connection and to create a safe pregnancy and birth.  I wish to make a spiritual contract to help bring a life into the world.
Jupiter:  Your wish is a fine one.  You may go to the portal.
Second Human:  Thank you.  And she does so.
Chiron:  Your little one awaits you on the other side.  He says things may not turn out as you expect, and that you have to be patient, but he wants to be with you, so you may speak with him to arrange it.  I will make sure you return safely to your waking life.
Second Human eagerly crosses the threshold.
Third Human steps forward.
Jupiter:  What is your wish?
Third Human:  I have been wronged and I desire justice.
Jupiter:  Your wish is a false one.  If your desire is for peace, you can find that here.  If it is for punishment, you’d best go back to your waking life.
A look of anger crosses Third Human’s face.
Third Human:  I have been wronged!  I wish for life’s balance to deal out pain where pain was given!
Jupiter:  Your bitterness will not bring you peace.  Let it go and pursue your own joy.  The person who hurt you will find pain to match it elsewhere, and that is not your story to know.  In your story, you have the power to be the place where the pain stops.  Dream of that, and for now, return to your sleep and awaken refreshed and ready to begin again.
He touches the forehead of Third Human, whose face relaxes and who turns and stumbles away toward the Waking World.
Fourth Human steps forward, holding a large messenger bag.
Jupiter:  What is your wish?
Fourth Human:  I have letters I wish to be delivered to my younger self and questions for my older self.  I want to encourage my younger self to pursue my dreams and ambitions and to be brave in the face of the challenges I know are to come.  I also want to ask my older self for guidance in moving toward the best future I can have.
Jupiter:  Your wish is a fine one.  You may go to the portal.
Fifth Human steps forward.
Jupiter:  What is your wish?
Fifth Human:  I am consumed with jealousy.  If I could just find out if my partner is cheating on me, I could have relief.
Jupiter:  Your wish is a false one.  If your desire is for peace, you can find that here.  If it is for punishment, you’d best go back to your waking life.
Fifth Human starts in confusion.
Fifth Human:  But we made a promise to each other!  That promise has been broken, I’m sure of it!
Jupiter:  You do not own each other.  Love yourself first and then others.  If you cannot trust your partner, then empty your heart.  After it heals, seek to share love elsewhere.  And for now, return to deep sleep, and awaken to your waking life refreshed and ready to begin again.
He touches the heart of Fifth Human, whose face relaxes and who turns and stumbles away toward the Waking World.
As there are thousands of sleeping Human Beings in line, ready for guidance or some other connection with the world of spirit, these two will obviously be busy for the rest of this harmonious transit.

Chiron and Pluto meet on a mountaintop.

Pluto: Say, Chiron, I thought we could compare notes on what we’ve been up to this year.
Chiron:  Yeah, that’s why they call this a “summit.”
Pluto:  What?
Chiron:  Never mind. I forgot you have no sense of humor.  So what have you been up to this year?
Pluto:  For a couple of years now, while moving through Capricorn, I’ve been busy pushing people to pursue their ambitions and where people and businesses are unethical, I’ve revealed the corruption.  It hasn’t always been pretty, but I’ve been taking out the garbage.
Chiron:  That’s your specialty.
Pluto:  Yes. What have you been doing since you entered Pisces?
Chiron:  Look at this bridge I’ve built—
Chiron points to a lovely structure that begins on the mountain’s side and juts out into the clouds.
Pluto:  Stunning.  What’s it for?
Chiron:  It connects the physical world with the metaphysical one.  Not everyone is capable of crossing this bridge and even fewer know how to come back.
Pluto:  I know some humans who would be very interested in this bridge.
Chiron:  If they pass your test, they are of high integrity.
Pluto:  True.  And that would qualify them to gain access to spiritual truths and wisdom that they can’t get in the physical world.  Which you show them how to get to.
Chiron:  Right.  Let’s try it.  Got any candidates?
Pluto:  Here are my finest.
Pluto snaps his fingers and a line of Human Beings begins to form, straggling up the mountain.  The first Human looks up every once in a while, straining her eyes for a view of her destination, the beautiful bridge.  She arrives at the summit.
Human Being:  Something inside told me that I should come here, but I don’t know why.
Pluto:  Do you run a business?
Human Being:  I am a CEO, yes.
Pluto:  Do you take responsibility for the well-being of your employees?
Human Being:  That responsibility is theirs, but I provide a pleasant work environment and decent pay.
Pluto:  Does your business offer something to the world that the world needs?  Is it something that builds more than it breaks?
Human Being:  It contributes to people’s lives while destroying none.  I feel good about it.
Pluto:  And is the way you do business in alignment with your core values?
Human Being:  Yes.  It is an expression of my core values.  The founders and owners feel the same.
Pluto:  Then you may pass.
He waves her on.  She steps out to the entry of the bridge, where Chiron stands.
Chiron:  If you continue your business in those ways, I have a gift for you, and a promise.
Human Being:  Oh my!  I had no idea!
Chiron:  The gift is that you will gain access to universal wisdom and deep peace of mind.  Your work/life balance is assured.
Human Being relaxes visibly.
Chiron:  The promise is that, when you reach the end of life and you look back on it all, you will feel that you have lived this life in the right way and you will be satisfied down to your bones.  When you leave your body at the end, the knowledge you gained will be poured into the Universal Coffers where others may partake of it and understand.  Do you see the value of this gift and this promise?
Human Being:  Absolutely I do.
Chiron:  Then go back to your life.  It’s not time for you to cross over yet.  Come back at the end of it all.
Human Being turns and walks silently back down the mountain.
Chiron (to Pluto):  Good candidate.  Got more?
Pluto (gesturing):  There’s a whole line of them here.
Chiron:  We’ll be busy until spring of 2014.
Pluto:  At least!
And so they will, as this harmonious sextile between transformative Pluto and bridge-building Chiron continues through February of 2014.

This year going with the flow brings success and fun:
Astrologers are very good at making dire predictions—but what use is that unless they can also tell you when is the BEST time to pursue new ventures?  I’m just the astrologer to let you know that this year, from June of 2013 to June of 2014 is a great time to start a new business or any project you want to go really smoothly.  And that’s because there is a very auspicious alignment of planets building up in the sky.  I’m telling you about it because it’s approaching its peak and I want you to be able to take full advantage of it before it ends.

The alignment is a set of harmonious aspects among five planets:  Saturn, Neptune, Chiron, Jupiter and Pluto.  Each of these planets has at least two harmonious connections going on right now with others of the batch.  This piles goodness upon goodness so that the summer and fall of 2013 is a very lucky and auspicious time for new enterprises of all kinds, and that goodness flows right into the spring of next year.  Most of this harmonious activity is happening in Water signs, with Pluto in an Earth sign connecting nicely with those Water signs and adding some dynamic tension too.

What these planets are up to. . .
Neptune is in Pisces
, a sign it loves to be in, bringing a tremendous sense of flow to this dynamic.  Because Neptune is involved, we have access to oceanic feelings of communion and connection, and our imaginations are fueled.  Our powers of manifestation and “dreaming things real” is at a peak.

Pluto is in Capricorn and Saturn is in Scorpio.  This combination is called a “mutual reception,” as each planet is in the sign the other rules, making them “mutually receptive” to each other’s agendas.  This alignment is all about power, purging corruption, doing the hard work of vulnerable leadership, and living each moment as if it was your last.  I’ve written more about it here.

Chiron the Wounded Healer is in Pisces, bridging the gap between material and spiritual worlds, carrying information from the physical to the metaphysical planes and back again.  You can take advantage of this through prayer, manifestation and other practices that get you into alignment with your spiritual guidance.

And finally, Jupiter will move into Cancer on June 25, 2013, and will quickly get into trine with Neptune, Saturn, then Chiron, completing the Water circuit.  Jupiter will also oppose Pluto, and bring just enough tension into the dynamic to spur all that lazy Water to action.  Jupiter in Cancer is in its all-time favorite sign to occupy, bringing a warm, nurturing feel and encouraging growth gently, as a summer rain encourages flowers to bud and open.

How does this affect me?
If you have a lot of Water in your chart, this astrological activity should feel really good, as if the rest of the world is aligning with the flow that is natural to you.  You may find yourself experiencing luck and being noticed in ways that don’t make you feel overexposed.  If you have lazy Water habits (such as living in codependent relationships, overpowering others with your emotions or draining yourself dry to serve and nurture others), these habits may be indulged this year and you could end up with no progress.  But if you decide to live your Watery side in the best way possible (by being conscious of your feelings but not dramatic, and being intuitive without being invasive), you could find yourself at the top of the heap with very little effort.

And the really good news is that if you are starting a business this year, or having a baby, you can look forward to your “project” having oodles of good karma.  Some kinds of businesses are better suited to this than others; you can see me for a consultation if you’re ready to know more.

This time period is especially good for:

  • healers
  • artists
  • nurses and caretakers of all kinds
  • midwives, doulas, ob/gyns and those involved with birthing
  • hospice workers and those who to assist peaceful death
  • any job that requires compassion and human kindness
  • spiritual and psychic helpers
  • anyone who works with children
  • financial analysts and investors, anyone who works with debt but especially those who assist people in trouble with management of their debt, including bankruptcy lawyers
  • therapists, counselors and coaches, psychologists, psychiatrists and psychoanalysts
  • hypnotherapists
  • . . . and the list goes on.

You may have seen my blogposts about Chiron and wondered “What the heck is that?”  Chiron is not something they teach about much in grade school when you learned the planets of our solar system, but it is a member of the planetary pack.  Not all astrologers use Chiron in charts, but those who do swear by its usefulness in understanding a human being’s primal wounding and how to heal that.  Chiron is also very useful for healers.

Astronomically, Chiron is a planetoid, sometimes called a “centaur,” with its orbit placed between Saturn and Uranus.  In our solar system, Saturn is the furthest-out planet that’s visible with the naked eye—Uranus, Neptune and Pluto lie in the further, more mysterious regions of space, and now Chiron too, like a bridge between the visible and invisible.  One of Chiron’s astrological themes is that of the bridge or shaman, the one that connects the known world with the worlds of mystery and the unknown.

Chiron’s orbit is very elliptical, like a very long oval, bringing it at one end inside the orbit of Saturn and at the other end outside the orbit of Uranus.  This means that its cycle is irregular.  Chiron passes through some signs very slowly and others much faster.  You’ll find many more people have Chiron in Aries and Pisces, because it takes almost 8 years to pass through these signs, while many fewer people have it in Libra and Virgo, because it takes less than two years to pass through them.  Gemini and Sagittarius have Chiron for the average time, about four years.  Chiron’s whole cycle lasts 50 years.

The 50-year cycle of Chiron leads to a significant life-passage all human beings go through in the year when they turn 50, and it’s the reason why age 50 is such a heavy birthday for so many people.  Any Chiron transit, whether it’s Chiron transiting something in your chart or something in the sky transiting your own Chiron, brings up old wounds to the surface for healing.  If you’ve been doing your healing work all along, your Chiron Return doesn’t have to be painful.  But if you have repressed your wounds and focused on coping while ignoring unhealed pains (whether emotional or physical), your Chiron Return will be a time when all the old, frozen stuff comes rushing to the surface.  For many people, this is overwhelming and they feel suddenly old.  For healers it can be a wonderful time of the blossoming of wisdom.  For healers who have been doing their own healing work on themselves, doubly so.  (Please note that being a healer doesn’t mean being a doctor literally—it is much broader than that and encompasses any situation in which wholeness is restored.)

The elliptical nature of Chiron’s orbit has led astronomers to speculate that it may be a comet captured by the gravitational pull of our Sun.  In this sense, Chiron may also be a bridge between our tiny solar system and the rest of the big, wide universe.  Chiron’s orbit is subject to instability caused by gravitational perturbations by Saturn and Uranus, possibly causing it to shift its orbit or even leave our solar system entirely at some point to become an actual comet, and so this centaur may be a “brief” visitor to our solar system—for a few million years.

You can read more about the astrology of Chiron here, including a little trip into Greco-Roman mythology.

January 10, 2013

Human Being is praying aloud.
Human Being:  I feel so lost.  Why will no god hear me?
Jupiter:  We hear you.
Chiron:  We are here for you.
Jupiter:  We noticed that you’ve lost something.
Human:  Indeed I have.  I’ve lost my wisdom.  I had a bag of pearls that I’d gathered all my life and they’re gone.  Completely gone.  Life makes no sense to me without being able to access them.
Chiron:  Nothing is ever truly lost.  Everything is kept for you.
Jupiter:  Wisdom gained is wisdom earned.
Chiron:  But to rediscover it, you’ll have to reexamine your past.
Human Being:  Why would I want to reexamine the past?
Jupiter:  You learned and grew through those experiences, you’ve gained those pearls of wisdom, but they’ve also become locked together like links in a chain that takes you into the past whenever anything triggers an old, trauma.
Jupiter hands Human Being a small leather bag.  Human Being opens it.
Human:  My pearls!  But look, you’re right, they are fused together.  Oh this is a hideous mess.  I can’t try to understand just one without the whole mass overwhelming me at once.
Jupiter:  Exactly.  Each pearl is an experience that contains hidden wisdom.  But they are locked together on this string—each one reminds you of another and another and another until you are overwhelmed.  You can’t draw on the wisdom of just one.  Your inner guidance can’t work while these are fused.
Chiron:  I’ll help you to loosen that string, and let the pearls of experience and wisdom fall free.
Jupiter:  Then you no longer have to get caught up in past pain in order to access your wisdom.
Chiron:  This has the wonderful side-effect of speeding your evolution as a soul who has lived many lives. . .
Jupiter:  . . . and allowing you to grow as a person in this life.
Human Being:  Ok, you’ve convinced me that it’s necessary, but how do I do it?
Chiron:  If you are willing to look inside yourself and ask yourself, “where am I split, where have I separated from myself?” then you can rejoin those parts of you that had been separated.  Bridge that gap.  Reconnect yourself to yourself.  Then you become whole.
Jupiter:  And then you find you are bigger, much bigger than you thought!
Human Being expands to twice his former size.  In his hand, the pearls begin to glow and separate, each finding its own shape.  Jupiter picks up one pearl and presses it to Human Being’s forehead.
Human Being (smiling):  I remember that.  I learned the importance of trust on that occasion!
Jupiter:  You did indeed!
Chiron:  And you get to keep that.
Jupiter:  And all the others.
Human Being:  Thank you!  And thanks for making it not hurt too much.

This square of Jupiter in Gemini and Chiron in Pisces began in July of 2012 and lasts until March of 2013.

As the scene opens, we see a Human walking through dreary countryside, carrying heavy burdens.  Saturn and Chiron show up on the scene.  They talk with each other.

Saturn:  I see you showed up to help.
Chiron:  Yes, of course.  A Human is in pain and here I am.  Who is it?
Saturn:  It’s a Wounded Father.
Chiron:  Ah, I’m familiar with those.  Remember when you and I got stuck with each other in the middle nineteen-sixties, when we were in Pisces?
Saturn:  I remember that conjunction all too well.
Chiron:  A lot of humans were born then that are still trying to figure out how to have structure and self-discipline in their lives in a balanced way.
Saturn:  That’s putting it mildly!
Chiron:  I try to be mild sometimes.  What can we do for this fellow now?
Saturn:  We need to show him that we can get along.  That we understand each other.  That having a father, and being a father, doesn’t have to hurt.
Chiron:  But the pain is a necessary part of the process!  The Wounded Fathers of the world are special to me.  They are working on healing their whole male line.
Saturn:  Some are having an easier time of it than others.
Chiron:  I guess it really is time to show them that fathers can be whole, that self-discipline doesn’t have to cut them off from themselves.  We’ll work on this human together.  Saturn, why don’t you start the process?
Saturn rolls up a little ball of magic and lobs it at Wounded Father.  Wounded Father straightens up and gets an ambitious gleam in his eye.  His burden feels lighter.  He takes off his burden and looks at it.
Wounded Father:  Hmm, maybe this isn’t really so bad.  Maybe there’s a reason why I have these burdens.  Maybe those who look to me, my children and other dependents, are reason enough to be inspired to go on.
His face looks brighter.  Chiron approaches.
Chiron:  Are you open to healing this father-wound?
Wounded Father:  It’s not mine—it came from my father, and his father before him.  Some of the fathers that came before me were too weak, some were absent, some overly harsh or controlling.  My family represents all the ways of fathering badly.  That’s why it feels so heavy.  I can’t bear it alone.  I can’t keep it together.  And people are depending on me.
Saturn:  Truer words were never said.
Chiron:  Show me the wound.
Wounded Father opens his shirt carefully.  His chest is a gory, bloody mass.
Wounded Father:  I’ve forgotten how to love those I support.  I have a family and I work to support them, but I’ve forgotten how to love them and let them love me.
Chiron:  You’ve split off your soul, haven’t you?
Wounded Father:  Had to.  Now I don’t know how to get it back.
Chiron:  Are you willing to heal the pain of not being fathered yourself?
Wounded Father:  I’m ready.  Just do it, because I can’t stand this anymore.
Saturn:  I’ll make sure you remain standing.  You have duties, remember?  But you don’t have to be stoic—you can become both strong and supple.
Saturn stands next to Wounded Father and holds him up.  Chiron opens his mouth and utters a single, godly musical sound, a sound too large for human ears to tolerate.  Floating in the air next to him appear some small points of light.  Chiron:  Fragments of your soul.
Saturn places them where they belong.  Wounded Father nearly doubles over with the pain of it.  He begins weeping and as he does, the wound closes and heals over.  He stands up, straighter than before.  There is a glow around him now.
Saturn:  That’s better, eh?
Wounded Father:  No kidding!
Chiron:  Can you forgive your own father for what he couldn’t give you?
Wounded Father:  Yes, and my whole male line—the generations of pain are finally over.
Chiron:  It stopped with you.
Saturn:  You’ve created a whole new legacy.  Now you can go on from here.
Wounded Father, no longer wounded, walks on in his inner landscape, which is now brighter and full of possibility.

This wonderful trine, happening from now till October of 2013, brings the opportunity to heal father-issues in a deep, powerful, yet gentle way.  If you feel you have father issues—especially if they are getting in the way of your career—a reading can help bring them to light and can accelerate any therapeutic process you may already be involved in.  Contact Jamie if you want to know more. Be sure to mention this post.

We find Chiron and Pluto in a dark cave, by an underground pool that glows with a magical light.  Chiron appears as a gentle, matronly woman with a kind face, dressed in green, flowing robes.  Pluto is dressed in flowing magenta robes and is wearing a fond, open expression that softens his harsh, hawk-like features.  They are beside the pool, stirring it with long staffs, occasionally tasting its contents with small spoons they carry in their pockets.

Pluto (putting his spoon away in a pocket):  That’s a very good blend, if I do say so myself.
Chiron:  Yes, this should work nicely.  Oh look, here comes the next one.
A Human Being, eyes closed and deeply asleep, shambles into the chamber.
Pluto:  I’ve got this one.
Pluto takes Human Being by the arm and guides him to stone steps that lead down into the pool.  When he’s fully immersed, Pluto seats him on a stone bench built into the pool that brings the water just to his neck.
Human Being (sighing deeply):  I didn’t know this was possible.
Chiron (whispering to Pluto):  They always say that.
Pluto:  Yeah, they just don’t get that change is possible.  Do you know that’s one of the biggest questions humans go around asking themselves and each other?
Chiron:  Which question?
Pluto:  “Is it possible to change, really change in a deep way.”  They habitually doubt it.  It’s like an epidemic down there on Earth.
Chiron:  They also doubt that it can be done without pain, and they don’t believe trauma and wounding can really heal completely.
Pluto:  It makes me sad.  My business is change—
Chiron:  —Well do I know it!
Pluto:  —and it’s frustrating to do all my good work in the world and have it go unseen and unappreciated.
Chiron:  Humans are mere mortals.  They have such tiny life-spans.  Your 250-year cycles are too long for them to make use of.  They can barely make use of my 50-year cycles.  They don’t have time to come to understand themselves through your long-term alchemical process of change.  At least they try.
Pluto:  They die trying.
Human Being stirs, murmurs, his eyelids flutter.
Chiron (grabbing Pluto’s sleeve):  Hey, I think something unusual is happening!
Human Being wakes up and looks around himself in alarm.
Human:  Where am I?
Chiron (takes his hand calmly):  You’re in the Alchemical Pool of Healing.  It’s going to be all right.  You’re only changing.
Human (fearfully):  I’m changing?!
Pluto:  Yes, for the better.  And it won’t hurt.  You could have slept through it.
Human:  Can I do that while awake?
Chiron:  You are one of the unusual ones.
Pluto:  Yes, but most people don’t want to.  Even if it doesn’t hurt.
Chiron:  Most people don’t want to change at all, anyway, anyhow.
Human:  I do.  I’m ready.  Please tell me what I can do to help it along.
Pluto and Chiron look at each other in surprise, then back at Human Being.
Pluto:  Well, ok.  It begins with a full-being scrubdown.  It happens on all levels—emotional, physical, mental and spiritual.  It goes way deeper than words.  I’m in charge of that part.
Chiron:  You have to trust and be vulnerable for that.
Human:  No kidding!
Pluto:  It’s about purging and letting go of the old.
Chiron:  You have to find the old thing that’s still stuck today.  That’s my department.
Human:  How do I do that?
Chiron:  It’s usually disguised as something painful that’s happening right now, a sort of trigger-point.
Pluto:  You’ll know because it’s a place in your life where you feel like a victim, where you haven’t taken your power back.
Chiron:  Then you have to get clear on which aspects of the experience are current and which are old, crusty grime from your past.
Pluto:  Then you have to remove that old grime.
Chiron:  —but gently!
Pluto:  —and you have to really let it go, along with resentment about it.  You can’t afford to continue holding onto resentment, entitlement or victimhood.  These are the final things that hold you back when you try to grow your power and initiative.
Chiron:  When you let it go, the new thing that’s bothering you in the present—the thing that triggered you and set you off—will go with it.
Pluto:  Then you have to practice not passing it on to someone who reminds you of yourself.
Chiron:  True.
They pause to stir the pool a little, then tuck their staffs into a notch at the side of the pool.
Pluto:  A human being is a library of experience.  You can take an old book off the shelf anytime.  You call this memory; we call it the eternal Now because we know there is no difference.  The past, present and future are all one thing wrapped up together, written in your heart and in your very cells.  Your body remembers—ask it.
Chiron:  To survive, you’ve had to press down the pain.  Now it’s hardened—is it dross or diamond?  It’s up to you to recover it and find out.
Pluto:  I see we’ve made you think, but don’t think too long—take action.
Chiron:  Yes, take action towards your own healing, because we don’t usually operate as gently as this. If we have to come back and do surgery, you won’t like that very much.
Pluto:  Are you sure you want to be awake for this?
Human Being climbs out of the pool and puts on a robe that’s lying there.
Human:  Yes.  I’m ready to go back to my life and do the work.
Chiron:  Then you have our blessing.
Pluto and Chiron touch Human’s forehead, and show him the way back to his everyday life.

(Seen this post before? That’s because Chiron goes retrograde every year. This year, does it affect YOU? Read on to find out. . .)

“Wake up!” says Chiron.  “Are you feeling wounded?  Recently I brought you a difficult experience.  It was also a reminder, an echo of a difficult experience from your past.  I have a special message for you about how to heal it once and for all.”

Chiron Turns Retrograde June 8–A Pivotal Day
When a planet turns retrograde it makes a pivot in the sky and also creates a metaphorically “pivotal” experience for human beings.  This time, that planet is Chiron.  It’s as if Chiron is telling us, “You can’t go on avoiding this change forever.  Now I’m delivering a wake-up call.”  If Chiron is touching a planet in your chart this year, this message is for you and it will have very specific meaning, depending on what planet that is.  That planet, and the part of you it represents, is being sent on a healing journey.  It’s time for old, wounded places to surface so that real, deep healing can happen.  June 8 is the peak of Chiron’s wake-up call, but it could happen anytime within 5 days surrounding that day.

Initiation Leading To An Inner Journey
Sometime between February and now, Chiron showed us an area of life in which we are due for a change.  What he delivered was an initiation and it was our first chance to catch a clue about the healing journey to come.  That clue may have been obvious or it may have been subtle, but we’ve been shown a way to heal something deep.  And the road to that healing may be pretty rocky.

The clue was delivered, but did we notice?  It’s human to go into denial.  During the spring we may have said to ourselves, “Maybe I don’t have to do anything about this.  Maybe it was just a one-time thing.  Maybe I can just move on.  Maybe I can get away without paying attention to this.”

Or maybe not.  Now Chiron turns up the volume and gives us a reminder.  “That deep healing you’re going through?” he says, “You’d better get with the program.”  This week, Chiron’s retrograde journey begins and with it begins our healing journey.  Chiron will continue moving retrograde (i.e. backwards) until the day it turns direct, which is November 10, 2011.

Every Healing Journey Begins With Pain

Have you ever had a medical condition that had to get worse before it could get better?  Perhaps you had a broken bone that set wrongly and had to be re-broken and set properly before it could really heal.  Perhaps you had a dislocated shoulder that had to be pulled out and dropped back into place.  Perhaps you had an abscess that a doctor needed to dig into and clean out before it could finish healing and seal over.  All these experiences reflect the fact that real, enduring healing often requires the opening of an old wound.  Chiron, the Wounded Healer, is in charge of this process.

Chiron’s process is connected to the homeopathic “doctrine of similars,” which is a principle that a very small dose of exactly the same thing that harmed you will assist your body to heal itself.  This principle is also the theory behind vaccination.  Similarly, you can have a life experience that delivers a small amount of emotional pain in the present, but that also brings up a whole mass of previously unexamined feelings from the past.  This brings us to Chiron’s “healing crisis.”

A “healing crisis” is a moment in which we feel worse, but we’re actually getting better.    This is a powerful moment and the way we respond to it determines how things unfold:  do we get caught up in the symptoms and mistake them for the reality of the situation, allowing them to propel us into a more difficult future?  Or do we recognize the symptoms as an opportunity to heal more than the surface discomfort?  It is normal and human to get caught up in the pain of the moment and it usually doesn’t occur to us to question its deeper roots.  But amazing things can happen if instead we stop and ask ourselves, “What does this remind me of?  What does this connect to in my past?  And is there something ancient there which, if healed, would liberate me?”

Is This Story Your Story?
If this feels true for you, it may be that you are personally touched by this transit.  Chiron may be triggering a planet in your own chart, thus bringing these themes up for you.  This year Chiron is covering the space between 0 and 5 degrees of Pisces.  If there is anything in your chart in 0, 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 degrees of Pisces, Gemini, Virgo or Sagittarius, you will feel this.  And knowing it can help a lot if you’ve been feeling smacked down by the universe and you don’t know why.  If Chiron has sensitized you this year, this could be the year when you finally let go of all the old baggage and gain access to more of yourself than you’ve ever had before.

What Area Of Your Life Is Being Affected?
Good question.  It will have to do with the planet in your chart that’s being triggered by Chiron.  If Chiron is affecting your Venus, you may find yourself in a painful situation in a present relationship that brings a larger relationship pattern into focus.  Now is your chance to heal this so as to stop unawarely bringing the past into the present.  If Chiron is affecting your Mars, you may find yourself feeling wounded about how you express anger or hold boundaries—this is an opportunity to heal this deeply in a new way.  And if you are turning 50 this year, then you are having your Chiron return, which is an enormous life passage loaded with healing themes and opportunities to clear the past and create a more powerful future.

Chiron’s Gift
A wonderful thing happens when we choose to examine a present pain more deeply.  Chiron links the past with the present such that, if we heal the new wound in the present, the healing echoes into our past.  Similarly, if we delve into our past and heal the ancient root of the problem, then the present wound can disappear as if by magic.  And the very best part is that whatever part of us was caught up or locked into that old wound gets released and we find that Chiron’s healing journey has left us more whole.  The part that’s released may be some part of us we haven’t had access to for a long time—we may even have given up on it long ago.  It’s funny how it ends up feeling like finding buried treasure, right in your own backyard.

Once upon a time, in the long ago and far away, when gods and goddesses walked the earth among humans and when human beings aspired to godhood, there lived a centaur named Chiron.

A centaur, as you may know, looks like a man from the waist up and a horse from the neck down.  There was, at this time, a whole race of centaurs, but Chiron was not really one of them, for he came to be a centaur in a different way.  He was the product of a rape.  Before Chiron was born, his mother, the nymph Philyra, attracted the attentions of Chronos (or Saturn).  Chronos was accustomed to taking whatever—and whomever—he wanted, and so he pursued her relentlessly.  She cleverly turned herself into a horse and sped away, but he turned himself into a horse also and caught her.  Chiron was the product of their unwilling union.  Think about that for a moment.  His mother abandoned him at birth without a second thought.  His father he never knew at all.

Chiron was always an uneasy union of opposites.  The way he came into existence was an example of that, along with the fact that he was, himself, half-god and half-beast.  A third example is in his attempts to negotiate treaties between the unruly centaurs (representing Freud’s unconscious or “id”) and their neighbors, the Lapiths (representing Freud’s repressive superego), even though neither fully accepted him as one of their own.  Chiron’s dualistic nature drove him to seek his own wholeness.  He was driven by a need to put the warring parts of himself together, so he could become one person.

Chiron in all his duality symbolizes an essential human problem:  a human being is a spirit in a body.  A human being is a bundle of instinctual needs and unconscious drives and yet “in aspect, how like a god” are we.  Has it ever occurred to you how funny it is that, when we are pointing out someone’s flaws, we say “He’s only human,” and yet, when we see an animal behaving in a way that seems beyond its capability, we say, “it’s almost human.”  It’s almost as if humanity itself is an odd blend of bestial and divine.  Chiron is this puzzle of being human.

Chiron formed a strong friendship with Hercules, the mightiest of heroes.  They fought in battle together, side by side, on many an occasion.  In one battle, amidst the confusion, a poisoned arrow shot by Hercules injured Chiron’s leg, causing what should have been a mortal wound.  But Chiron, being immortal, could not die.  So the animal part of him had to suffer while the divine part maintained his connection to life.  Perhaps it was for this reason that Chiron became a renowned healer.  He studied herb lore and healing ways and became a medicine man in search of a cure.  He never found one, but he found something better—a way to transcend his suffering and to become truly whole.

During this period, Prometheus was being punished.  He was one of the Titans, the gods before the gods we know best (Jupiter, Mars, Venus and the crew).  Prometheus thought Man was a pretty good invention, the best and brightest of the earth-dwelling mortal creatures.  He believed human beings should have fire, so he stole some from Mt. Olympus (home of the gods) and gave it to humanity.  For this, he received an extremely harsh punishment.  He was chained to a rock in the underworld and each day a huge eagle (or in some stories a griffin) came and ate his liver from his still-living body.  Each night it grew back.  Before leaving him there to endure this daily torment for all eternity, Jupiter (aka Zeus) declared that whoever of all the gods wished to, might relieve Prometheus of his torment if that god was willing to take his place for just one night.  After that night, the rescuer would die and become a ghost in the underworld, as if he were mortal.  No one agreed to—and why would they?  They were gods.  They had immortality and a luxurious existence.  Why would they give that up?

Chiron heard this and thought to himself, “I am already suffering on a daily basis and there is no value to my suffering.  If I took on the suffering of Prometheus, at least he would be freed.”  Chiron did so—he took Prometheus’ place on the rock and endured the torment of the giant bird.  Jupiter was so impressed with this behavior that he did more than make good his promise to free Prometheus.  He liberated Chiron from not only the rock, but also the torment of his own wounded body, and placed him among the stars as the constellation Sagittarius.

Now I want to point some very important things out here.  Chiron’s decision to heal Prometheus by taking on his pain was exactly the thing that liberated Chiron himself.  It was a truly selfless act.  It also illustrates a healing principle of homeopathy: “in the poison is the cure.”  Which means that a very small amount of the very thing that hurt you will cause your body to cough up and expel, in a healing reaction, the original damaging agent.  It is also the reason why people drink in the morning to cure a hangover, calling it “the hair of the dog that bit you.”  And this principle is related to inoculation, in the idea that a small amount of a disease, when introduced into the system of an otherwise healthy person, will cause that person to create antibodies which stand ready to fight the disease if it appears in force later in life.  Whether preventative or curative, all these principles suggest that small amounts of poison effect cure.

Chiron’s story is both beautiful and profound but for Chironic types (people with Chiron placed strongly in their chart) it is more than this:  it is a life-path with deep, rich meaning.  To be on the path of the healer is a gift which hurts at first, but leaves one with a wholeness, a sense of being knitted together and of having access to all of oneself that would not be possible if the wound had not been there in the first place.

The key to this is to spend as little time as possible in the victim role, and to, as quickly as possible, move on to the role of survivor and ultimately to become a thriver.  If you’re a Chironic type, you cannot afford to get self-indulgent anywhere on the path, because you will get stuck there.  Acknowledge that the pain is life’s gift, driving you onward toward healing and wholeness—for yourself and the many others lucky enough to cross your path.

Chiron is a part of all of us. All of us have a primal wound, a wound that feels like it will never heal.  Our human tendency is to think that we are special in our woundedness (“You don’t know how it feels to be me” was how Tom Petty put it) but that attitude is the very thing that forms the greatest obstacle to our healing.  In order to heal and truly move on to surviving and thriving, we must let go of the glamour of victimhood.

Chiron is split; he is both wounded and divine.  Chiron in your astrology chart shows a place where you came into this life ready to be wounded.  It also shows a place where you have a capacity to be divine, extraordinary, special.  Heal the wound and you are left with the divinity.  How do you heal the wound?  Three ways:  First, accept and bring yourself to love the broken or split off side of yourself.  Second, let go of attachment to being special in your brokenness, a victim of your fate.  And finally, heal others who are like you because this will bring out and exercise your divine ability.  You don’t have to do these in any particular order—life will send you random opportunities to do all three.

Chiron’s gift is great, but unattractive.  Can you accept it and make something of it?  If you can, you will release the pain of being human and take your rightful place among the stars as a constellation.

If you’ve never heard of a planet called Chiron and you’re wondering where it is in our solar system, Chiron, What The Heck Is That? will answer your questions.  That post also has more about Chiron’s 50-year cycle, which leads to a powerful life transition we all experience when we turn 50.  If you’re near 50, you definitely need to check it out.

In the last month (February of 2011) Chiron has now moved into Pisces for the first time in 50 years.  Chiron is the Wounded Healer and Pisces is the symbolic “ocean of dreams.”  What does this mean?

In Greek and Roman mythology, Chiron is a healer, but he is also a wounded figure.  He is usually shown limping, because he’s a reminder that everyone has a broken place inside.  He is also a centaur—half horse (from the neck down) and half god (from the waist up).  He is a symbol of our own human nature—half-beast and half-god, and that as human beings, we are an uneasy union of the animal and the divine.

Chiron is The Broken One, The Walking Wounded, the Healer and every character who has ever touched greatness through suffering.  Chiron says:  “I’m here to show you the old, stuck places in you that linger from the past.  This may sound painful, but it’s actually an opportunity for healing deep, ancient wounds and recovering your human birthright.”  Chiron’s gift is the accelerated evolution that comes when we own our wounding and do what is necessary to make ourselves whole.

In 2011, Chiron, the Wounded Healer, leaves Aquarius and moves into Pisces.  Chiron in Pisces does his work gently, bringing up old wounds having to do with intuition and illusion.  If you’re cut off from your intuition, Chiron will show you.  If you’re deluding yourself about something, Chiron will know.  “Watch your dream life,” says Chiron, “That’s where I’ll be, showing you places where you are split or broken and showing you how to heal them.  You’ll find wholeness in your dreams and in your spiritual practice.”  Even people who never thought they had a spiritual side may find themselves on the path during Chiron’s passage through Pisces.  It lasts until 2018.

Tomorrow, I’m going to tell you the tale of Chiron, so you will learn why he is the wounded healer and what that means.

Neptune and Chiron have met on a cliff overlooking the ocean.  Neptune is a lovely lady in sea-green, aqua and deep blue colors, with a long, flowing skirt.  Chiron is a centaur, rustic-looking and worn, but kind.

Chiron:  Who are we healing today, Neptune?
Neptune:  All of them.
Chiron:  What?
Neptune:  You heard me:  all of them.  All human beings.
Chiron:  How are we going to do that?
Neptune:  By getting one person to stand in as Everyman.  Or Everywoman.  Doesn’t matter.
Chiron:  So one human being gets healed and the whole human race benefits?  Sounds like a Jesus complex.
Neptune:  He was one of my own.  He was very good at standing for everyone.
Chiron:  How are we going to find someone that. . . cosmic?
Neptune:  All I have to do is this.
She waves her hand over the waters and drops rise up and become a mist.  The mist flows over the land, leaving dewy sparkles on the trees and rocks.  Soon a Human Being stumbles forth from the trees, climbing the cliff to the place where the gods wait.
Human:  You called?
Neptune:  You’re one of mine, aren’t you?
Human: (nodding)  Can’t really help it.  Everybody calls me a flake, but it’s because I’m lost in one of your dreams all the time.  I can’t seem to stay alert.  I have what’s called “an active imagination.”
Neptune:  That’s right.  Now try this!
She sprinkles fairy dust all over the Human, who begins to appear as a sort of shiny blur.
Neptune:  Your turn, Chiron.
Chiron:  Don’t mind if I do.
Producing a bow and arrow from somewhere, Chiron takes careful aim and shoots the Human in the heart.
Human:  Ow!
Neptune:   You should thank Chiron for that.
Human:  What on earth do you mean?
Neptune:  That’s a primal wound he just gave you.  It’s a gift.  It will make your soul evolve faster.
Human: (sarcastically) Gee thanks, just what I always wanted.
Chiron:  I just can’t get any respect.
Neptune does something funny with her hand in the air, and then the Human appears as even more of a blur.
Neptune:  (to Chiron) Oh, by the way, you’ll need these.
Neptune hands Chiron some special glasses.  They have a rose tint to them.  Chiron puts them on.  The Human Being now appears entirely different, and in fact is hidden behind a huge pink cloud that’s where her heart should be.  That cloud gets wispy around the edges, then tendrils start to form, which curl outward and reach in every direction.  The tendrils multiply until there are tens, hundreds, thousands, then millions of them.  The Human Being has become a nexus of love, a heart for everyone who is alive.  There is a look of deep peace on the Human Being’s face.
Neptune:  Ok, I’ve connected this one with all other humans.  Your turn again.
Chiron rummages around in a bag he’s wearing on his back.  It seems to be filled with medicines, remedies, herbs, medical equipment and other stuff.  He pulls out a small bottle.
Chiron:  Stick out your tongue.
The Human Being obediently does so.
Chiron:  This will sting a little.
Using a dropper, Chiron allows one drop of the stuff to land on the Human Being’s tongue.  The Human Being begins shaking from head to toe, and a change in color cascades down the giant pink aura surrounding her, filling it with a stormy grey, which is just as quickly followed by a restoration of pink, now a deeper, richer hue.  The grey cascades out the tendrils, finding its way into the heart of every person alive, and is followed by the warmer, deeper pink.  It is as if the whole planet shudders.
Neptune:  Wow—that was cool!
Chiron, proudly:  Thanks!  You’re pretty cool yourself!
Neptune:  What now?
Chiron:  I think we can leave this to cook for a while.  Our work here is done.
Neptune takes Chiron’s arm and together they walk off over the water.

Chiron and Neptune have been traveling together in our skies for 18 months, bringing spiritual healing and community in their wake.  Now it is November of 2010 and their conjunction is coming to a close.  Here are some posts I’ve written about it:

Neptune and Chiron Ask You To Bridge Heaven and Earth

If what follows looks familiar to you, it’s because this is my post from last year when Chiron went direct.  Chiron goes direct every year, so the post continues to be useful, but the dates will be slightly different every year.

Chiron the Wounded Healer has spent the last few months (since June 4) traveling backwards.  Today he turns his face forward and re-covers the same ground.  Why should it matter to you?  If he’s passing through a zone where you have a planet in your natal chart, he’s bringing you a powerful healing opportunity this year.  And it’s not over yet.

This Is A Pivotal Day
If you are one of the millions of people having a Chiron transit this year, today may be pivotal for you.  Around June 4, you came to realize (or perhaps you were forced to realize) you were facing a big life-change.  You’ve been confronted with a part of you that feels deeply broken, maybe even unfixable.  Something wounding has happened to you this year and you’ve been preoccupied with it.  It all really began earlier in the spring and by late May you realized you couldn’t really avoid the pain.  If you decided to accept the discomfort and seek healing, kudos to you—you’re doing the right thing.

Today (and I mean this loosely—it may happen as soon as 2 days before or as late as 2 days after today) is a pivotal day in this process.  Today may be the day you come to clarity.  If you really look at the situation you can see your chance to resolve some old, unfinished pain along with resolving the present situation.  And you’re gearing up to do that sometime between now and February of 2011.

“What is a Chiron transit like . . .”
During a Chiron transit, something painful usually happens.  It feels like you’ve been wounded to the core.  You may feel that you’ve been victimized, that what’s happened is beyond your control and never should have happened.  And you could well be right about that.  But there’s something deep going on here that’s not apparent on the surface.

The pain you feel is not really about the present at all.  It’s about the past.  Chiron has sent you a wakeup call, using an event in the present moment to remind you of a part of you that has gotten stuck in woundedness.  Chiron wants you to heal that part of yourself and he knows that it will only happen if he reminds you that it exists, because human nature causes us to bury pain unless it is acute.

Whatever you’re dealing with in the present is connected with something in your past.  If you heal it here and now, that healing has echoes into the past, healing it retroactively.  That may be good news but there’s also great news and that is, it works both ways:  focus on healing the past and the present will be healed too.  You can work it from either end, whichever is easier for you.

Here’s an example of just one way this could look.  Let’s say your boyfriend does something that hurts you and reminds you of your abusive father.  Cleaning things up with your boyfriend is an opportunity to heal the inner child in you that’s been stuck at the age of greatest wounding.  And if you take a break from fighting with your boyfriend and instead focus on healing your relationship with your father (which you can do inside yourself, whether he’s actually available or not), voila!  Your relationship with your boyfriend improves, almost magically.  That’s because they are connected.  And who drew the connection?  Chiron.  And because Chiron connected the past with the present via a wound that feels the same in the past and the present, you get a heal-2-for-the-price-of-one deal.  Not bad, actually.

“. . . and how do I know when I’m having one?”
First of all, you know by feel.  If what I’ve described resonates for you, it’s likely you are having a Chiron transit.  (If it resonates, but only a little, you may be having a transit, but by a planet other than Chiron.)  Transits are almost always accompanied by real-world events, which are woven into your experience of the change.  Transits feel distinct when they are happening, and the sensation distinctly fades as they end.  When a transit is over, your preoccupation with its themes quickly fades as your attention becomes grabbed by a different transit.  Occasionally a person will have no major transits at all for a time period (weeks, say, or months), but that’s pretty rare.

You can find out whether you’re having a Chiron transit by peeking at your chart.  This year Chiron is covering the space from 26 degrees of Aquarius to 0 degrees of Pisces.  This will affect you if you have any planet in the space from 26 to 29 degrees of any of the four Fixed signs (Aquarius, Taurus, Leo or Scorpio) or in 0 degrees of any of the Mutable signs (Pisces, Gemini, Virgo or Sagittarius).

If you don’t have your chart, or don’t know how to read your chart, you might want to order your own personal Astrology Chart Decoder.  This is a special tool I’ve invented that puts your chart’s details in English, instead of astrology symbols.  Your Decoder tells you where every planet in your chart is located:  the sign it’s in, the house it’s in and the exact degree it occupies.  When you’ve got your Decoder in front of you, check to see if you have anything at all in 26-29 degrees of Aquarius, Taurus, Leo or Scorpio or 0 degrees of Pisces, Gemini, Virgo or Sagittarius.  If you do, you are definitely having a Chiron transit this year.  And knowing that gives you the chance to see the healing for the opportunity it is, instead of being victimized by it.

“How long does it last?”
A Chiron transit will typically last for 9-18 months.  Today is just one part of it, a pivotal day in the flow of a months-long healing opportunity. The timing of your transit will be personal to you.  It takes an astrologer to look it up—it’s not something I can just tell you in a blogpost.  In an astrology reading you can find out the timing of it and how to move beyond hurting to surviving and ultimately to thriving.  You can also find out which part of you (i.e. planet in your chart) is being affected by this wounding-and-healing opportunity.  Is it Relationships (Venus)?  Career (Saturn)?  Home (Moon)?  Or it could be something more subtle.

“What do I do now?”
There are 2 responses that are crucial to know about.  If you can manage these, it will go so much smoother for you!

One is: don’t play the victim.  While you sit around bemoaning the fact that you’ve been hurt, you’re throwing away your own power in the situation.  If you can accept and own that you had a wounded place long before this moment came along and give thanks for this opportunity to heal yourself, you are way ahead of the game.

And the other is: don’t get distracted by healing others.  When a human being begins to gain competency in an area where they feel wounded, the first tendency is to offer assistance to others.  This is a beautiful thing, but it also comes with a possible pitfall, which is that you can get distracted from your own healing path by the sense of superiority you feel towards others that are not as far along as you are.  It can be very comfortable to congratulate yourself that you’re doing fine compared with all those folks that are not doing as fine as you are.  But that’s a way of avoiding your own healing work.

Chiron’s Gift
Chiron’s gift may be painful to receive but it is profound:  it is the gift of getting your own wholeness back.  Were you split?  Now you can mend.  Were you wounded?  Now you can heal.  Was your past unresolved?  Now you can resolve it.  This is your chance to become more whole, more of your own complete self than ever before.

When it’s over, it’s over
After this transit ends, your healing period will be over.  It’s quite possible you’ll have another healing period in a different area of your life in the next few years (it’s likely in fact), but this one will have passed.  Take courage, because this will soon be over.  But also, and more importantly, take advantage.  Use this opportunity for healing while it’s happening.  It doesn’t come around every day.

(My dear readers, this post was supposed to go out on June 4, but I just didn’t have what it took to get it out on time. Obviously I was feeling the transit as I was writing about it! 😉 So please mentally transport yourself back to June 4 as you read this. . .)

“Wake up!” says Chiron.  “Are you feeling wounded?  Recently I brought you a difficult experience.  It was also a reminder, an echo of a difficult experience from your past.  I have a special message for you about how to heal it once and for all.”

Today (June 4) Is A Pivotal Day
When a planet turns retrograde it makes a pivot in the sky and also creates a metaphorically “pivotal” experience for human beings.  Today, that planet is Chiron.  It’s as if Chiron is telling us, “You can’t go on avoiding this change forever.  Today I’m delivering a wake-up call.”  If Chiron is touching a planet in your chart this year, this message is for you and it will have very specific meaning, depending on what planet that is.  That planet, and the part of you it represents, is being sent on a healing journey.  It’s time for old, wounded places to surface so that real, deep healing can happen.  Today is the peak of Chiron’s wake-up call, but it could happen anytime within 5 days surrounding today.

Today Chiron turns up the volume and gives us a reminder.  “That deep healing you’re going through?” he says, “You’d better get with the program.”  Today, Chiron’s retrograde journey begins and with it begins our healing journey.  Chiron will continue moving retrograde (i.e. backwards) until the day it turns direct, which is November 5, 2010.

This year Chiron is covering the space between 26 degrees of Aquarius and 0 degrees of Pisces.  If there is anything in your chart in 26, 27, 28 or 29 degrees of Aquarius, Taurus, Leo or Scorpio, or additionally in 0 degrees of Pisces, Gemini, Virgo or Sagittarius, you will feel this.

Today Jupiter and Chiron are in conjunction for the third and final time in 2009.

Jupiter and Chiron have met on a giant cloud over Mount Olympus, home of the gods.  They are watching events on Earth.

Chiron: (pointing) Hey, Jupiter, you see that little human over there?
Jupiter: You mean the one with all the intolerance?
Chiron: Yeah, that one over there, surrounded by people different from himself.
Jupiter: Not too happy, is he?
Chiron: No.  Shall we?
Jupiter: Of course!
They link arms, then disappear in a puff of smoke, reappearing near the human in question.
Everyman: Wha–?  Who the hell are you?
Jupiter: Different from you, apparently.
Chiron: Yep, it seems that everyone is different from you.  Don’t you ever get lonely?
Everyman: I don’t know what you mean, but I do know you aren’t from around here.  So here’s the point-end of my gun.  Go back where you came from, before I shoot!
Jupiter sticks out one finger, plugs up the end of the gun.  Everyman shoots and the bullet is stopped by Jupiter’s finger.  Everyman looks at his gun, dumbfounded.
Jupiter: You see, there’s really no need for this.
Everyman: Now you’re making me mad!
He gets out a bigger gun, but before he can use it, Chiron suddenly grows very large and picks him up by the collar, shaking him until he drops all weapons.  Several fall from his clothing and clatter to the ground.
Chiron: Silly human!  When will you learn?
Jupiter: Intolerance will get you nowhere.
Everyman: (choking a little) You don’t understand!  They are going to kill us!  They won’t let us just be—so we have to get them first.  It’s the way of the world.  If we don’t protect our way of life we’ll lose it.
Jupiter: But if you keep fighting, you’ll lose your life anyway.  And who will be left around to continue the culture you’ve built?  Why are you fighting anyway?  Who is the real enemy here?
Everyman is still dangling from Chiron’s grip.  Chiron drops him suddenly.
Chiron: (shaking his head) I can’t make you tolerant.  But I can show you what’s possible.
He picks up a rock and breathes on it.  The rocks clarifies, becomes like a pool.  In the rock, pictures begin to appear.  Everyman becomes fascinated and steps closer.
Jupiter: What do you see?
Everyman: I see my people, fighting our neighbors, as we’ve always done.  So many dead, so much territory changing hands over so many years.
Chiron: Do you want your children to die for this?
Everyman: I, um, I don’t know.  I want our way of life to continue.  I’m not giving up our ways!
Jupiter: What if you didn’t have to?
Everyman: I don’t want my daughter to marry one of them!
Chiron: I understand, but what if your battle is over?  What if no one is right and no one is wrong?
Jupiter: What if you could spend your days in building up your culture instead of tearing down theirs?
Chiron: And what if their culture contains some hidden key, some mystery that can unlock something in yours—wouldn’t you want access to that?
Everyman: (grudgingly) Maybe.
Jupiter: You’re a hard case.
Everyman: Yeah.  I’m not budging.
Jupiter: (to Chiron) He doesn’t seem to have any clue that he’s not unique in his intolerance.  It’s as if he really believes his culture is superior.  This is useless.
Chiron: (to Jupiter) I think it’s time to visit the one we really came here to see.
They turn their back on Everyman and walk into a nearby house.  There, seated on the floor, is an 8-year-old of indeterminate race, who looks up in surprise.
Jupiter: Hi there!
Child: Whoa!  You have got to be deities!
Chiron: You guessed it.  Can’t fool you for a minute, can we?
Child: Nope.
Jupiter: Bit of a mess out there, isn’t it?  He points outside with his thumb.
Child: No kidding!  Everybody’s killing each other all the time.  They killed my dad because he’s not like them.  They shun my mom too.  Did you come to fix it?
Chiron: No, we came to do something better.  We came to help you fix it.
Child: No way!  That’s not better—that’s worse.
Jupiter: Yeah, it wasn’t my idea, it was Chiron’s.  Blame him.
Chiron: You were born to be a bridge between the two cultures you came from.
Child: Don’t be an idiot.  How am I supposed to do that?
Jupiter: Because you want to be whole.  Because you have two sides and yet you are one person.  Until you completely own and accept both sides of you, this war will continue.  Make friends with both sides and you make yourself whole.
Child: That sounds hard.  I don’t know where to start.
Chiron: Start wherever you are.  Find the places that are broken in you and make them whole.  Gather people who are different together and get them talking about what makes them the same.  Help them learn from each other.  This will make you whole and it will save the world you live in.
Jupiter and Chiron begin to go up in a puff of swirling smoke.
Child: Don’t go!  I can’t do this alone.
Chiron: You won’t really be alone.  We’ll be behind you the whole way.
Jupiter: You can do it.  It is your gift to the world.  And you have your whole life to do it in.

Jupiter & Chiron Ask “Am I Too Big Or Not Big Enough?”

Chiron icon by BetelgeuxChiron the Wounded Healer has spent the last few months (since May 30) traveling backwards.

Around May 30, you came to realize (or perhaps you were forced to realize) you were facing a big life-change.

And you’re gearing up to do that sometime between now and March of 2010.

This year Chiron is covering the space from 21 to 26 degrees of Aquarius.  This will affect you if you have any planet in the space from 21 to 26 degrees of any of the four Fixed signs (Aquarius, Taurus, Leo or Scorpio).

When you’ve got your Decoder in front of you, check to see if you have anything at all in 21-26 degrees of Aquarius, Taurus, Leo or Scorpio.

Art by Betelgeux

From May of 2009 to November of 2010, Neptune and Chiron are dancing in & out of conjunction with each other.  They came within kissing distance of a conjunction on May 30, 2009 and will again on November 6, 2010.  Their only true (exact) conjunction will be on February 17, 2010, but since they’re close enough for us to feel it here on earth, I thought I’d better let you know what this is about.

While you are in a dream, you find yourself in a beautiful, ancient forest, filled with tangled trees and brush.  You sit quietly, feeling at peace with the world and your place in it.  Among the trees you spy two beings who must be gods because they are larger-than-life and they glow.  You sit very quietly and watch them from behind a tree.
Neptune is a slim woman, dressed in a flowing garment that is always moving.  Sometimes it looks like water, sometimes mist and sometimes clouds.  As you look at her, you can’t quite get a fix on her position, even though your peripheral vision sees that she is there.  It’s like the way some stars are so faint you can’t see them dead-on; you have to look a little to the side.  She is like that.
Chiron is a little more solid.  He is a centaur, standing strong on his four horsy legs while his naked human torso rises proudly from his animal body.  He seems comfortable with his odd self, which makes you feel comfortable too.
The two are having a conversation, which you are able to overhear.

Neptune:  I have always loved this beautiful green place.  I love how it could be on any continent, anywhere on Earth.
Chiron:  Me too.  What do they call this?
Neptune:  It is the Wood Between The Worlds.
(And if you ever read the Narnia books as a child, particularly The Magician’s Nephew, you now know exactly where you are.)
Neptune picks up her skirts, which go green to match the surrounding leaves and she spins, casting off green sparks of living energy.  Then she laughs and sits on the grass, her skirts gathering around her but still ever-moving.  She reaches out her hand into a nearby pool of water and gently touches its surface, smiling meditatively.

Chiron:  What world is in that pool?
Neptune:  It’s the ideal world of that silly little human over there, hiding behind the tree.
You freeze, wondering how she knew.
Chiron:  She’s a goddess, silly!  That’s how she knew.  You can come out now.  We’ve turned down the volume on our divine presence, so you won’t get blasted.  It’s safe.
You slowly come out from behind the tree.  Neptune is beckoning softly.
Neptune:  Why not have a look?
You:  What am I supposed to do?
Neptune:  Sit here beside me.  Meditate and make your mind very still.  Take the armor off your heart and reach way down into your belly for the last moment of real bliss you felt.  Then, when you’ve done all that, put your hand in the water.
You are nervous, but you obey.  Making your mind still turns out to be harder than expected, and removing the heart-armor is hard too.  After you’ve done those things, feeling the bliss is fairly easy and soon you reach out to the pond.
As your hand slips into the water, you become aware of descending into a beautiful landscape.  As you look around you, you notice it’s just like the everyday world you know, except everything is just a bit brighter and warmer.  There are people in this place, and they are happy—really happy, deep down, not just in a phony way.  You see that they are doing what they love to do and somehow it all fits together.  There is no sign here of all the things you hate and fear:  war, poverty, disease, and the rest.  This is a well-functioning world.  Everything is as it should be; everything is perfect.
You are struck by the disparity between the world you long for and the world you live in and you begin to weep.  You realize that you need to bridge this gap in order to make yourself whole.  With that realization, that there IS a way to this beautiful place, your heart breaks open and you can feel sunlight streaming out from it.  Peace descends upon you.
As you come back to yourself, you realize Chiron’s hand is on your shoulder, touching you reassuringly and giving you strength.

Chiron:  Do you know what you must do now?
You:  I have to create that world, on Earth, in my own life.
Chiron:  Yes, exactly.  You are the bridge.
Neptune:  You are the one, the only one who can do it.  Don’t wait for someone else.  Your world is special; everyone must create their own heaven on earth.
Chiron:  And it’s not a burden, not something you must do, but something you get to do.
You:  Woah.
Chiron:  Yeah, “Woah.”  That’s right.
Neptune and Chiron link arms and stroll away through the wood, leaving you to ponder this.  As they walk away, you can still hear their voices, fading but ringing clear through the trees.
Chiron:  Do you think that one knows what it’s going to take?
Neptune:  Nope, there’s absolutely no clue.
Chiron:  It’s probably better that way.

Neptune and Chiron will be doing their dance in the sky from May of 2009 to November of 2010.  They will make 3 passes.  The first and last pass will be inexact but extremely close.  The middle pass will be exact on February 17, 2010.  If you have any planet in your chart between 25 and 27 degrees of fixed signs (Aquarius, Taurus, Leo, Scorpio), you are bound to feel this.

Jupiter & Chiron have been moving in and out of conjunction (i.e. so close they could be holding hands) in 2009, bringing up some interesting possibilities for healing & growth.
They connected the first time this year on May 23rd, the second time on July 22nd and will contact again for the third & final time on December 7th.  What does this mean?

Jupiter Wants You To Expand
Jolly Jupiter represents archetypal greatness.  He’s the part of human nature that inspires us to grow, expand ourselves and travel beyond our limitations.  He’s the call of the wild, the thrill of adventure that stirs in our souls when we think about traveling to far places.  Jupiter stirs our confidence and our faith in our own potential.  Jupiter also brings opportunities and the luck that naturally comes from the good energy we easily radiate when he is active in our chart.  But Jupiter’s opportunities must be seen and seized, or they will disappear as fast as they appeared.  Jupiter’s message is “Grab that brass ring as it goes by!”

Chiron Wants You To Heal And Evolve
Chiron is the archetypal Wounded Healer.  He brings us opportunities for healing ourselves or others.  Chiron is the mechanism by which the wounded places that lie hidden within us reach out into our lives, creating circumstances where we can feel a pain we’ve experienced in the past, bringing in it up to the surface so healing can occur.  Our job is to convert painful experiences into healing opportunities when Chiron presents them to us.  This is only possible if we let go of our victim attitude and instead view ourselves as in charge of our own healing.

Here’s a little Chiron-and-Jupiter dialogue:

Jupiter and Chiron have met on a mountaintop, where they can see for miles in every direction.  Jupiter is full of enthusiasm.
Jupiter:  I can see such enormous possibilities for humanity, and especially for the individuals I’m sending luck and opportunities to right now.
Chiron:  Yes, but they have so many wounded places holding them back from their own greatness.  I’m going to have to bring those up to the surface, so they can be seen & healed.
Jupiter:  That’s very like you, Chiron.  Always trying to help people be more in touch with themselves.  (Jupiter makes a wry face.)
Chiron:  It’s because I’ve figured out that the hidden wounds people carry make them sabotage themselves and can prevent exactly what they’re trying to create.
Jupiter:  I have something nice to add to the mix:  self-confidence.
Chiron:  How does that work?
Jupiter:  It’s a little something for those who choose to take on their inner demons and look them straight in the eye.  It’s the feeling that you get when you shine a light into the scary corners and know that you can slay this demon.  You have what it takes.
Chiron:  That self-knowledge is healing in itself.
Jupiter:  But what about the folks who have trouble being big?
Chiron:  I know the ones you mean.  They feel uncomfortable taking up space in the world.  They think it’s not ok to be big, or expressive.  They cringe around people who are just a little too loud.
Jupiter:  Yep, that’s what I mean.  How can I expand those folks?
Chiron:  I’ll help you by getting them into situations that will bring those issues to the surface.  They’ll find themselves uncomfortably close to people who remind them of the greatness they desire, and the recognition they deserve and are not getting.  If they’re willing to look at their past and release trauma (even mild trauma) from past experiences where they decided that they needed to keep themselves small, then they can reclaim their own greatness and stop being small themselves.  Release can take many forms:  crying, shaking, raging, or letter-writing (which is powerful, even if the letter is not delivered).  Then the real healing can begin.
Jupiter:  Sounds uncomfortable.
Chiron:  No doubt.  But the rewards are huge.
Jupiter:  And huge is my middle name!

Will This Affect You?
If you were born on any of the following dates, this could be a big deal for you:
February 9-15
May 11-17
August 13-19
November 12-18

And if you happen to know your chart, look for any planet you have in 21, 24 or 26 degrees of fixed signs (Aquarius, Leo, Taurus, Scorpio).  Those are the degrees of exact conjunctions between Chiron & Jupiter this year.

A reading can give you an in-depth understanding
of how this conjunction affects you.

As you may know, Neptune, Chiron and Jupiter have met in the sky this month.  This triple conjunction is a powerhouse of meaning.  In my previous post I talked about what it means that Neptune, Chiron and Jupiter are in Aquarius.  That was a follow-up to my first post in this series, which talked about the meanings of these planets in themselves.  What follows is the third of the 3 posts and should serve to bring it all together.

What Do These Planets Want From You?
They want you to dream a big dream of community and togetherness.  They call for you to heal your community and yourself by taking up your full space in your public social arena and being visible.  They say there’s some part of you that you’ve been hiding, some place in you that feels split and has kept you participating only halfway in some communities.  They say that if you connect those communities you will not only make yourself whole but also make room for others who may have felt marginalized to express themselves.  They say that community can be a spiritual experience.

They say you should trust your intuition and they add that this time is a special opening in human consciousness—people are looking for answers.  People are disillusioned but ready to dream again.  People know that it all needs to be redreamed.  These 3 planets are telling you it’s time to believe six impossible things before breakfast.

Here’s some conversation overheard among Neptune, Chiron and Jupiter:
Neptune:  The human family seems to have become splintered.  I think they forgot how to love and accept each other.
Jupiter:  I’ve noticed that some human beings keep themselves pretty small in their lives.
Chiron:  Yeah.  I think it’s because they forgot their own power, maybe got caught up in their own broken places.
Neptune:  Everyone has broken places.  That’s what makes life so interesting.  That no one is perfect makes it all so . . . perfect.
Chiron:  Neptune, you’re full of paradox, aren’t you?
Neptune:  That I am.
Chiron:  I suspect that if people dove right into the most painful places, they would find the ways we are all connected.  Then they could stop isolating themselves and rejoin the human family.
Jupiter:  No one is an island, eh?  I subscribe to that belief.
Neptune:  Me too.  But it sounds uncomfortable.  A person would probably have to feel deeper alienation before the healing happened.
Chiron:  True.
Jupiter:  Do you think humanity is ready for that?
Chiron:  I’m not sure.  But I’ve noticed some pretty big dreamers among them.  Those few could open up the way to a wonderful new world.
Jupiter:  And there are a few crazies who are ready to hope again.
Neptune:  Let’s blast the planet with some cosmic energy & see what happens!
Chiron:  What will that do?
Neptune:  I’ll send each human being a beautiful vision of their ideal community. . .
Jupiter:  I’ll give each person the confidence to do something about that vision. . .
Chiron:  And I’ll break each person’s heart just a little, so there is a crack in the armor for the love to seep in by.
Jupiter:  Ok, let’s do it!
They huddle up and form a giant blast of energy, which they release at Earth.  Poof!  Green and gold sparkles everywhere.
Neptune:  Nice!
Jupiter:  Now let’s go get coffee.
Off they trot, arm in arm in arm.

What will the results of this triple conjunction be?  Only time will tell over the years to come.

“The needs of the many outweigh needs of the few—or the one.”  -Spock

In my previous post I introduced the 3 characters in the present Triple conjunction in Aquarius:  Jupiter, Chiron and Neptune.  In this post I’ll talk about what it means that they are in Aquarius (see more posts on the nature of Aquarius here).

Aquarius Is About Change
This sign is associated with breakthrough, change and experimentation.  Aquarius is radical, progressive and drawn toward the cutting edge.  This Fixed Air sign loves ideas and abstract thought—a well-thought-out idea is valued for its own sake.  Aquarius is associated with breakthrough thinking and paradigm-shifting, giving access to the “Eureka!” experience—that moment of insight when the light bulb goes off over your head.

Aquarius Is About Science and Technology
Aquarius (and its ruler, Uranus) is the Scientist (sometimes the Mad Scientist!), the Brilliant One, the Nerd.  This sign is experimental, loving to step back and look at things objectively.  Aquarius is cool and collected, intellectual and logical.  Uranus rules electricity and networks and Aquarius loves the rapid changes and developments in the computer field.  Having to keep current with computer and software updates is a joy to Aquarius.  This sign is fascinated with all things scientific and technological.

Aquarius Is About Community and Networks
Let’s face it, Aquarius loves people—but at a distance.  Aquarius is the Humanitarian. the Social Activist, sometimes even the Scapegoat—willing to take the hit for the progress of the team. This is the sign of the Rebel or Revolutionary, the one who overthrows the King (Leo, Aquarius’ polar opposite) and decentralizes power, bringing it to the people.  But Aquarius has difficulty getting intimate with actual individuals in real time.  Connecting a little with a lot of people while keeping them at a cool distance is much more comfortable for this ultra-gregarious sign.

The Aquarian Dark Side
It’s easy to see how this sign, while associated with beautiful themes, can also go too far.  Aquarius can be overly analytical, cold, emotionally detached, preferring hard logic over feelings or even inhuman to the point of being a sociopath who does not feel a part of the rest of humanity.  Embracing social change can go too far, resulting in a radical who wants overthrow of the current order regardless of consequences or a social changer who wants their group’s agenda forwarded with no regard for the cost to others.  Aquarius is prone to groupthink, to loss of individualism within the group-mind.

What It Looks Like When Neptune, Chiron and Jupiter Act In Your Life Through The Medium Of Aquarius
Neptune, the Spiritual Awakener, acting through Aquarius will bring you into contact with groups of people for the purpose of spiritual growth.  Neptune in Aquarius says:  “I am the spinner of dreams and fantasies.  In Aquarius I’m dreaming of ideal communities, places where people can come together and feel a sense of universal connectedness in humanitarian causes.  Some of the visions I dream up may not work in material reality and may lead to disappointment, but I’ll dream them anyway.”  Neptune’s dark side expressed through Aquarius can bring you into contact with groups of deluded people who together subscribe to a shared point of view that alienates them from the rest of humanity, instead of connecting them to it.  This is the sort of place people end up when they crave acceptance and will do anything (or believe anything) to get it.

When Chiron, the Wounded Healer, is in Aquarius, the time is ripe for healing past experiences of groups.  Chiron in Aquarius says:  “I’m going to get you into situations where you feel like an outsider so you can deal with the sense of alienation and rejoin the human family.  I’ll also bring opportunities for joining groups that give you a sense of community in areas of your life where you may have not thought it possible.  If ultimately you come to the understanding that we’re all in this together, my work will be well done.”  The dark side of Chiron in Aquarius is the witch hunt, a situation where one person is cast out, misunderstood and the group is pitted against them.  A witch hunt is hard to distinguish from a intervention, where a group gathers to show an individual his own shadow, because they love him and want him to stop some destructive behavior.  Whether a situation is a witch hunt or an intervention often depends on your perspective and whether or not you take a victim stance.  It is possible to endure something you may at first call a witch hunt and ultimately to respond to it in a way that make you more whole, not more broken.

And last, but definitely not least, Jupiter in Aquarius will create opportunities for playful, growthful and expansive group experiences.  Jupiter says, “Go do a workshop, because your personal growth will go better with other people around.  Throw a party and have fun with like-minded folks.  Gain confidence in your ability to hang out and take up space with lots of people around.  Expand your social network and enjoy all the varieties of people you’ll meet.”  Jupiter’s Aquarian shadow side has to do with grabbing the group spotlight and puffing oneself up to be bigger than others.  Jupiter in Aquarius secretly thinks, “of course everyone is equal—but some are more equal than others,” and sees himself and his contribution to the group as superior.  This attitude can be leavened with a little humbleness to bring Jupiter back onto a level with his peers.

What is the mission of the Jupiter-Chiron-Neptune conjunction?  How can we use it to make our lives better?  Tomorrow I’ll finish up this 3-post series by bringing it all together.  And maybe we’ll overhear a dialogue among these 3 planets.

Here at the end of May of 2009 there is a momentous and extremely rare triple conjunction of Neptune, Chiron and Jupiter in 26 degrees of Aquarius.  This conjunction provides an unprecedented opportunity to re-experience your place in the human family in ways that bring growth and healing.  To understand what that means, we start by looking at what each of these archetypes is about, so let me introduce you to Neptune, Chiron and Jupiter . . .

Here’s Neptune.  Think of Neptune as the Dreamer or the Visionary.  She’s wearing a long, flowing dress that shimmers.  You look carefully, but you can’t tell whether it is made of stars, water or wind.  She is beyond lovely so that it actually hurts your heart to look at her.  She gazes at you with compassion, and restrains herself from showing you her full glory because she knows no mortal could take it.  Although her mouth doesn’t move, you hear her voice anyway, as if it’s coming from everywhere and nowhere at once.

She says:  “I am the weaver of dreams.  I bring you beautiful visions of what could be.  My gift is longing. Once you have seen my visions, you will be caught in the place between wanting and having because my visions are always of things that are to be or could be but are not now.  That is their nature.  A vision is a beacon.  It is not for having—it is for filling your heart with courage to pursue its beauty.

Next comes Chiron.  He’s a centaur, a strange creature who is half beast and half god.  You feel discomfort as you look at him, because you recognize his divinity but his beastliness is unattractive and it seems impossible the two could be blended in one being.  He’s a reminder that to be human is to be an uneasy union of the beastly and the divine, and that our job as human beings is to bridge gaps and make ourselves whole.

Chiron says:  “I’m the wounded healer.  I bring you an experience of irreconcilable differences, a duality within yourself so profound that it splits you in two.  Your job is to bridge those disconnected worlds within yourself and your life and thus to make yourself whole.  Wholeness can only come from accepting and truly healing the break between the side you judge beastly and the side you judge divine.  My work is shadow work and the wholeness that arises from it is my gift.”

And finally, Jupiter appears.  He’s a large, jolly fellow dressed in a flamboyant, flowing cloak in bright, fiery colors.  His coat swirls when he moves, lending grace to his large frame.  He is the Sage, the Storyteller, the Explorer and the Seeker, always on a quest.  His voice is just a little too loud for comfort, but it feels so good to be around him that you don’t really care.

Jupiter bellows:  “You must grow and expand!  Get out and try new things!  Life is an adventure!  You are capable of greatness—you owe it to yourself and others to pursue that greatness.”  While your mouth is hanging open at the sheer force of personality emanating from this deity, he deftly pours a liquid down your throat from a flask he wears.  Suddenly you are filled with exhilaration and confidence and the certainty that you can do anything you set your mind to.  “There you go—that’s my gift,” chuckles Jupiter.

These 3 deities have much to say to each other during their triple conjunction, but that will have to wait until tomorrow.  This post is post 1 of 3 coming up this week.  In my next post, I’ll talk about what it means that these 3 are in the sign of Aquarius.
